Planet Fitness Cancels Woman's Membership After She Reports Transgender Woman In Locker Room
A woman in Midland County, Michigan, had her Planet Fitness membership canceled after she refused to stop telling other gym members that a “man” was using the facilities in the women’s locker room.
Yvette Cormier claims that when she went to exercise at her local Planet Fitness in Midland on Feb. 28, she came across a male gym-goer in the women’s locker room.
"I was blocked, because a man was standing there," Cormier told WNEM TV 5 in Saginaw, Michigan on Friday. "It freaked me out because, why is a man in here?"
Cormier complained to the front desk.
“This is very unprofessional. This is very scary,” Cormier added. “They told me the same thing, that he was allowed in there because that’s the sex he wants to be.”
Cormier said she understood that some men identify as women and that some women identify as men but said the person had a very masculine appearance. The person has not been identified.
Planet Fitness is well-known for its “judgment-free policy” and a statement released by McCall Gosselin, public relations director for the popular chain of gyms, said that any member can use the locker room that corresponds with the gender a person identifies with.
“Our gender identity non-discrimination policy states that members and guests may use all gym facilities based on their sincere self-reported gender identity,” the statement said. “The manner in which this member expressed her concerns about the policy exhibited behavior that management at the Midland club deemed inappropriate and disruptive to other members, which is a violation of the membership agreement and as a result her membership was cancelled."
Meanwhile, Cormier believed the incident was “one-sided” and that she was “the only one being punished.” She also asked that Planet Fitness provide a third locker room for transgendered people

MIDLAND, Michigan– It’s a business that sells itself on being non-judgmental but Planet Fitness has allegedly revoked the membership of a woman for complaining (http://www.wnem.com/story/28278233/planet-fitness-drops-member-after-gender-identity-complaint), according to WNEM.
Yvette Cormier, a member at the Midland location, says she had no idea what that meant until a few days ago.
“I was stunned and shocked. He looked like a man. He did not look like a woman,” says Cormier. Cormier is talking about a person who walked into the woman’s locker room while she was getting undressed. She says she couldn’t believe her eyes.
“This is very unprofessional. This is very scary,” continues Cormier. Cormier says she immediately complained to the front desk and eventually to corporate offices.
“They told me the same thing, that he was allowed in there because that’s the sex he wants to be,” says Cormier.
Cormier says she understands that some men self-identify as women and some women self-identify as men but says this person looked like a man and that caught her off guard.
Cormier lost her membership for violating the company’s ‘Judgement Free Zone (http://www.planetfitness.com/About-Planet-Fitness-Gym)‘ policy.
Moving forward, Cormier says she isn’t concerned with getting back her membership. Her concern now is to warn other women at this gym to make them aware of this policy, because she says Planet Fitness failed to warn her.
The company told TV5 that Cormier’s concerns about the policy regarding gender identity was inappropriate and disruptive by complaining to other members at the gym.

Lemme tell you a little story - its called stirring an uproar

Once upon a time in a land far, far away there was a boy named Ashton.
Ashton was six months into his transition
One day (wearing boys clothes) he walks into the men's room to go potty
There are two other men in the restroom and both have confused/shocked/shy/wtf look on there faces.

Ashton caused a uproar!

The next day Ashton dresses as Ashlyn and attempts to use the ladies restroom for the very first time!!!!
As Ashlyn walks into the ladies room Togo potty she sees another woman who is washing her hands
The woman looks at ashlyn, smiles without raising an eyebrow and goes back to her business

Ashlyn never used the boys room again!!!!

I'll probably end up getting slammed for writing this but...

The transgender person should had used common sense, you can't just walk into a ladies looker room wearing men's clothing. "HE" obviously identifyed as a man on that particular day otherwise "HE" would had been wearing woman's clothes identifying "HER"self as a woman.

You seriously have to pay attention to others reactions when you're using a gender pacific room. Its not always about making the transpersonal feel excepted but more about how others are effected.

Good for Planet Fitness! It took me a while to figure out the presumsbly cis-woman who complained about sharing a lockerroom with a transwoman is the one who lost her membership. I'm so used to hearing about Trans people get the short end of the stick, I assumed the worst. Glad to be wrong about this.

Keegan Burnett identifies as a man

I should be able to use the men’s facility because I am legally a man.
--Burnett

Despite the acrylic nails on his hands and feet, and despite the women’s clothes, hair and make-up Keegan identifies himself as a man.

I guess I don’t meet the standard of masculinity and they figured that I probably can just go anywhere and use the bathroom but not at their facility.

restroom discrimination district ordered to pay

District ordered to pay transgender student $75K

Transgender student Nicole Maines, centre, with her father Wayne Maines, left, and brother Jonas, speaks to reporters outside the Penobscot Judicial Center in Bangor, Maine.

ORONO, Maine — A Maine court has awarded the family of a transgender girl $75,000 in a settlement of her discrimination lawsuit against a school district where administrators made her use a staff, not student, bathroom.

Nicole Maines won her lawsuit against the Orono school district in January before the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, which ruled that the school district violated the Maine Human Rights Act. It was the first time a state high court in the U.S. concluded that a transgender person should use the bathroom of the gender with which they identify.

A lower court awarded her the financial settlement last week. It will go to the Maines family, the Boston-based Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, and Berman Simmons, a Portland law firm that represented Maines, said GLAD spokeswoman Carisa Cunningham.

The Penobscot County Superior order, dated Nov. 25, represents the conclusion of the court case that began in 2009 when the Maines family and the Maine Human Rights Commission sued the school district. The order prohibits the district from "refusing access by transgender students to school restrooms that are consistent with their gender identity."

School administrators across the country are grappling with the issue.

Nicole, now 17, is a biological male who identified as a girl beginning at age 2.

Nicole was using the girls' bathroom in her elementary school until the grandfather of a fifth-grade boy complained to administrators. The Orono school district determined that she should use a staff bathroom, but her parents said that amounted to discrimination.

Gender-Nonconforming Gay Man Loses Gym Membership for Not Being ’Manly’ Enough

A Louisiana gay man, who wears women’s clothes and makeup, says he was discriminated against after employees at a local gym allegedly revoked his membership because he is not "manly" enough, New Orleans ABC-affiliate WGNO reported Wednesday. (http://wgno.com/2014/06/17/cross-dressing-guy-not-manly-enough-to-keep-gym-membership/#axzz3566LDVjA)
Keegan Burnett, from Slidell, La., says he was harassed when he tried to use the men’s locker room at Slidell Athletic Gym.
"I’ve been this way all my life," he said. "I should be able to use the men’s facilities because I am legally a man."
Burnett was allegedly prohibited from using the men’s locker.
"I guess I don’t meet the standard of masculinity and they figured that I probably can just go anywhere and use the bathroom but not at their facility," he added.
After he was told he couldn’t use the locker rooms, he took the issue to management, hoping for a better outcome. Burnett, however, lost his membership.

After he was told he couldn’t use the locker rooms, he took the issue to management, hoping for a better outcome. Burnett, however, lost his membership.

"I think what’s most upsetting is when you have a situation where someone is harassed by individuals and the organization or a company decides to take the side of the people who are doing the harassment," Forum For Equality Executive Director Sarah Jane Brady told WGNO.
Brady continued: "There should be no way shape or form where someone should be asked to leave a health club or theater or a library or anywhere, restaurant because who they are; or who they’re perceived to be."
Burnett says he is the victim of discrimination.
"You have people come in here with purple hair, blue hair, green hair, piercing and tattoos all over," he told the news station. "You don’t tell these people anything. I want to let them know that it’s not right. This is 2014; everybody have a right to be who they are."
The athletic club’s general manager, Tina St. Clair, said the gym does not "tolerate discrimination of any kind."
"We wanted Keegan to stay a member, but he felt uncomfortable. We cancelled his membership per his request and issued a refund," she said.
According to St. Clair, Burnett wanted to use the women’s locker room. Burnett, however denies the claim.

Before I retired from the workforce, there were occasions where I had the misfortune to work alongside women who like to tattle on me or another coworker.

The decision to revoke this troublemaker's membership is well deserved. Good for the gym. Now lets all watch this nagging whiner play the victim.

I like the idea of GG's having to see or acknowledge TS's. It is good for GG's to realize they have some competition and it is growing fast. To be confronted with it face to face. Many men complain about the attitude of GG's. Complaints about being stuck up, stand off-ish. "you owe me something", "God's gift to man", "I have something you want and I know it". While TS's have a lovely attitude. Perhaps GG's will finally be forced to reform their ways.

This proves Straight people have rights also, it's becoming where gays are forcing their life style on everyone and wants everyone to conform to it like ancient Greece! Every dam show you see on tv now has gay men kissing as though it's normal and it's not and it's down right sicking.

This person had no business in the women's locker room! period.

Certain proof that the day of gender-specific toilets is well over and done with.

As a bloke, I have no problem standing at a urinal or pissoir while anyone walks past me. Other guys don't, so they can use a stall...

One huge advantage for everyone is that having to share bathrooms with women just might make some of the more revolting toilet-users clean up their act a little.

For women who haven't had the misfortune to use or enter a male toilet, they are at least 500% worse than women's toilets in terms of filth/graffiti/general unpleasantness.

And I've cleaned 'em, so I bloody well know!

Shared toilets will send the Neanderthals back to the bushes they belong in.

I get where you were going with this particular paragraph, but I don't feel it's a black and white scenario. I quite often wear my brother's hoodies when I go out. Does this then mean that I shouldn't use the ladies restroom? Then again, I don't think straight up crossdressers should use the bathroom of the gender whose clothes they're wearing, but this statement kind of supports that they should.

Skye: YOURE TRANSSEXUAL you look like a woman, do you use the men's room? If so how does that work for you?

The "trans personal" at question isn't even transsexual but a crossdresser who gets off by wearing woman's clothes

Thanks for clarifying that for me, Ashlyn. However, I wear my brother's hoodies a lot instead of, like, a girls hoody, because I'm still not passable, which is why I brought up whether or not I should be using a certain bathroom based on the clothes I wear. However, I always use the girls restroom, I don't even really think about it, honestly.

This is the worry that I've had; people who aren't trans who abuse the system for the purpose of perversion. The problem is someone could go "today, I'm a girl!" and as long as they identify that way that day, they can use the facilities associated with that gender. I don't really know the solution or if there's even a concrete [perfect] one for that matter, though.

I find it unbelievable that someone could believe what you're saying and have the audacity to express it here. It is normal for gay couples to kiss as that's how they express affection. I've heard heterosexual men and women do the same thing.

We don't live in a country where you can be legally punished for homosexuality, so why should anyone have to hide their attraction for members of the same sex? What you're actually suggesting is that we turn back the clock on gay and transgender rights several decades, on a site featuring transgender women and their admirers. Very classy.

Skye

I don't think that a crossdresser should be using the female changing room or bathrooms to begin with. It's not discrimination to stop them. Crossdressers aren't trans; they clearly identify as the gender they were born as. The "Man" was a crossdresser, not a trans person. He should have been arrested, not the other way around.
