Hi Ladies and Gentlemen and everybody in between,
I remembered this song called, Sex Changes by, the Dresden Dolls.
I was having a discussion, several years ago, with a pre-op transwoman friend of mine concerning the meaning of this song.
We both came up with very different interpretations of what the song could mean.
I would rather hold back on what i thought (and still do think) the song is about because i don't want to influence anybody's opinion.
However, i will say that while i was focusing only on the lyrics, my friend was focusing mostly on the images in the video.
We both had very different ideas.
I must add that my friend's first language is French and English is her second language, and because of that, she may have missed the meaning of the lyrics completely.
I, actually, forget what her idea was because it was really so bizarre what she thought, that it's hard to remember all the crazy things she saw into it. She had some really abstract opinions.
Let me maybe suggest a method of analysis:
First, just read through the lyrics a couple of times without the song playing and not looking at the video, and try to form an opinion based just on the lyrics alone, and see what you think of. Maybe you could even mark down your ideas about each verse means to you.
Second, then listen to the song and read along with the lyrics - BUT not watching the video images as the song plays, and see if your opinion changes.
Third, finally, watch the video and listen to the song and see what you come up with, then.
For the people who already know this song inside out, be like me and don;t post your opinions right away. Let other people have a chance to think about it.
