It appears that TOR was developed, funded, and has been supported by the US government. Interesting article below.

I know people who say they use it for privacy- whether business or (in the case of one whack-job) "so the government can't track my posts on second ament forums.).

But let's face it- most TOR traffic is probably related to illegal stuff.

I'm willing to bet that TOR browsing isn't quite as anonymous as people might think.

And coincidentally, a few hours ago news was released that CERT likely cracked TORs anonymity. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-28573625

A few days ago Russia offered a bounty to anyone who could de-anonymize the service. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-28526021

And TOR says they have a fix. But TOR is government funded.

Interesting.

i don't see how this is news to anyone except non-tor users

I'd think it would only be news to TOR users instead of non-users.

The only people I know who use it were convinced of an assumed impenetrability.

But we can argue about anything, if that's what you need. I'm here for you.

but the first page of the application even warns that it's penetrable. and if you use it regularly, you'd know how constantly the security changes which kinda suggests, there's always something to fix (thus, not impenetrable)

The company doesn't seem worried- I think the response was "yeah, it's a bug but we can patch it."

I've never used it- I'm not spying for anyone, and HA is the freakiest site I visit.

I keep getting this image of hundreds of rusty white panel vans heading for the Mexican border.

It just reads like a government honeypot.
