I've never been but I've heard that it's safe. The only thing that turned me off about brazil is the cost if your coming from the US. Also the hotels seem very expensive for what you are getting.

When I go to Rio I use www.vrbo.com to find an apartment. I have found some as low as $50 a night although that was a few years ago. But you can find one for $100 a night very easy. The air fare is way too high.

rio is kind of like new orleans... only a little edgier. if you dont do stupid stuff, dont flaunt wealth, you should be ok.

rio is awesome, paraty and petropolis are also nice, belo horizonte was surprisingly clean compared to rio, but the city was closer to being something like a mid-western city. there are some awesome old colonial towns in minas gerais though.

Just make sure you have someone in the group who can speak Portuguese. Spanish can get by as well.
