I'm a Ralph's guy. Great prices, so-so quality, and a big-boobed Mexican lady at Checkstand Four.

I know Ralph's. That's a good market. Right next to my place is a whole foods. Average food, prices sky high, and paper bags. I really would like to do the environmental thing. I've heard you complain about this too I think...but paper bags are not a substitute. This market is so close so I walk, and the paper bags break when when I'm trying to get the milk into the apartment. So they tell me to use these permanent bags which I'm never gonna remember to take. I fucking loathe whole foods.

Stop & Shop, a big chain here in New England. Name-checked in The Modern Lovers song "Roadrunner."

You know what gets me? When I go shopping in Toronto and forget to bring my bags. They charge a nickel for every thin plastic bag and never offer the paper option.

Plastic bags are still in the produce aisle. I used them for my groceries and quadruple bag now. Thanksgiving I might say no bags but I need help out to the car with 150 items. I'll buy bullshit just to pass it on down the road.

I get needled from so many directions in LA it makes me batty. I get more suspicious every day too. Waiting for Garcetti to pull his panties to the side for the DWP. Everybody in town hates the DWP regardless of party. I never know if things are for a good cause as they are sold or a money grab for redistribution to get re-elected.

Careful of those permanent bags and make sure to wash them good.

Do you really use the produce bags lol? I can imagine myself trying that at the whole foods and getting stampeded.

That's a pain, but I'll tell you if I had the option to pay for plastic bags I'd do it routinely.

Where are the Albertson's & Randall's people in here? Don't be shy now? The water's just fine. Any H.E.B. peeps here too? I shopped there when I lived in Texas and remember being unable to buy Whiskey on a Sunday. Some outlaws those Austin people are. Where were Waylon & Willie to aid and abet?

I think Vons is closing because they look like Jons now. Appears CDC jumped on the one on Santa Monica & Barrington.

I was so passive-aggressive with this one gal I dated she would beg me to yell. I show my contempt by using more plastic material than they would freely give me before the law. I put on seminars whenever I'm able to corner folks. I remind the cashier they are issuing me a fine except if it is the big-boobed Mexican lady at Checkstand Four. I stare at those like they are the greatest fishtank ever never harassing her for a moment about that trivial nonsense. God damn those udders are massive.

The one on National & Barrington has undead pale soccer moms with a green hue to their skin gnawing on carrot and celery sticks watching their children go rampaging through the store giving me nervous diarrhea. Ralph's in Westwood is Heaven for young Asian gals. I duck in the bathroom when I get so horny I start to hear voices.

Gelsons is that way sometimes. Quite a few girls wanted me to drive them there (specifically the one on Laurel Canyon and Riverside). I'm like hell no.

I miss the days of Alpha Beta, Lucky, ABC, The Boys, hell even Jewel-T. Fucking Kroger bought out a lot of those spots.

Von's is still cool with me...and so is Safeway when I'm in the Yay Area. I'll also pop up in Cosco and Smart & Final once in awhile.

Fuck Walmart and their satellites.

I see Food 4 Less and Stater Brothers commercials all the time but have no idea where they are. Must be next to Sonic. Those guys in the Sonic commercials crack me up.

Gelsons is my favorite store but I shop at Ralph's more often. I got this really great custard fruit pie from their bakery recently and I always enjoy their tender, flavorful rotisserie chicken. Nice Pumpkin Pies for Thanksgiving and Pecan Pies for Christmas too.

Yes, but the UK is pretty catholic when it comes to embracing food culture. They were my local store when I moved to Cambridgeshire but I soon came to recognise the difference in quality, presentation and staff and now that I've moved to York, they're still my provider of choice.

Waitrose is the food part of the John Lewis partnership, a popular and profitable UK retailer. What marks them out is that they are a genuine partnership. Every employee enjoys access to all the employer-provided benefits, but more important than that, they also participate in a universal profit-sharing scheme and are actively encouraged to contribute to business issues.

You can't imagine Walmart doing that any time soon, can you?

Tesco, because it dominates the main street, although there is a food section in Marks & Spencer nearby, whose bakery is superior, for what that's worth. We now have at least four independent artisan bakers/cake shops in town. If I want to go upmarket and shop in Waitrose I have to take a bus ride to the next town, because their selection of cheeses and cold meats are better than most, but their alcohol section is no better or worse than Tesco or Marks but all three fail compared to an independent local shop that sells outstanding wines and spirits.

My recollection of California when I was there, is that the food in supermarkets is generally of average to poor quality; there is a substantial amount of processed food in the USA which is loaded with sugars and fats and which I think contributes to weight problems/obesity. I was not impressed with the fruit and veg, but did see a farmer's market in the middle of San Francisco when I was last there, and which might be the best place to buy things like that; my relatives in Canada will drive distances to buy fresh produce at farmer's markets. I did go to an Italian supermarket somewhere in Ontario which had some good Parma ham, but in Canada supermarkets are not allowed to sell alcohol which we can buy in supermarkets in the UK, often at good prices.

How do you guys do your bags there? They got rid of the plastic bags here deciding by default to leave dog poo on the grass. We have paper bags but they fine us a dime for them. You guys pay for bags? As far as the answer to your last question it's a no.

I'll go to Tesco, Sainsbury or Morrisons when I'm looking to buy general stuff in bulk, but if I want to eat well, it's always Waitrose. Now that I live in a city they're all easy to get to - Sainsbury's and Asda are just a few minutes away - and I buy my cheese and other deli foods in a place just off Newgate Market - Henshelwoods, if you're passing - but Waitrose, despite the claims that it's more expensive, is still way ahead of the others. And York is blessed with plenty of terrific specialist foodshops.

It has, after all, just been voted the UK city where most people would like to live. No surprises there.

Now, if I could just persuade Sammi Valentine to move here, my life would be complete. :)

In my younger days I had a run in with the police in York, they objected to me and my sleeping bag camping out by the city wall and said that if they found me there again they would run me out of town. As if I cared. I left later that day and have never been back. So here is one person who doesn't want to live there.

It's a bit different since Sir Robert Peel was PM, Stavros. We even have indoor plumbing now.

I shop at the Ralph's on Bundy/Wilshire on an almost daily basis. Hate the place. The checkers (mostly) never smile or acknowledge you outside of a brief hello, and spend most of their time talking to themselves. Horribly managed, and busy all the time. I don't have a car, and I live in the neighborhood so I'm devoted to the place. Shit. At least the booze is cheap.

We buy plastic ones or most stores offer "bag for life" a stronger more expensive, typically larger bag that your then expected to carry around and shit, welcome it into your family, give it a name , a birthday. We are so advanced here :D

But my "Sammi" bag is getting proper respect. i only use it when i go to Harrods or Harvey Nicks

I went to a Target in Florida a few weeks ago. They were offering wine tasting. So I asked to have a sip and was told I could only have it if i could produce an ID to prove i am over 18 (or was it 20). Now ANYONE who has met or seen me will know I look, how you say, a little bit older.

Fifteen years ago, I used to work as a bagger at Safeway as a second job. I learned that like public employees, grocery employees are also represented by a union and that the working conditions at Safeway, while not the worst, was less than stellar in my opinion which I don't blame on the union, but any employer that has employees represented by a union is a warning sign regarding the working conditions. For one thing, low-level managerial employees are the biggest assholes in any grocery.

we don't have a Trader Joes here or I'd go there. We have Publix (which gets expensive quickly), Winn Dixie (eh), Walmart (which has 30 registers with only 3 open no matter what time of day) and Target (the least painful to go to).

I bounce around between all of those.
