What do you think about Kim Dotcom The Man Behind Megaupload

Been looking at videos about this guy and want to know what you guys think about him and this case about Megauploads.

I used to play quake2 against him many years ago. he was shit, he coded an aimbot. Cheat0r. He seems to be someone who needs to cheat to get himself through life, good luck to him.

he's now mellowed out considerably with exception to his extravagant (wired) home constantly making shitty techno music, playing with his kids, holding some gaming competitions (he's #1 at some xbox game) and making websites.

I highly doubt he would ever be a honest #1 at any game :) Agreed he was highly skilled at other things, h4x, coding, etc. :)

as a business man who capitalized on a market, that's cool...however, that doesn't change the fact that he did knowingly support piracy, which is not cool.

i'm not really on the side of recording artists and the mpaa, or for that matter porn producers when it comes to whining about piracy because lets face it, if there was no profit to be had, there would be no material to pirate at all...BUT...i am against other's profiting from pirating the work of others. if you produce something, it is your right to profit from it.

that said...did anyone see the simpson's last night. idk if it was a new episode or not, but they poked fun at piracy and torrent sites.

haha oh i see :) Lol anyone in gaming knows the history, not that many of us around who can remmeber it 1st hand through off barrysworld q2 servers. he did it at a live event in new zealand.

he could still very well be a cheat, but he's at least chilled out from his days doing kimempire and gumball which was like the zenith of his assholism

we're talking about his beginnings. the mega thing was him trying to do something legit like mitnick, but his real claim to fame was hacking a dubai bank to prove money transfers for the guys that flew the planes into the twin towers

even before that he was a very serious hacker for the german scene and was known pretty well around most hax0r groups (this is around the mid 90s)

If you think he's "cool" then you've bought into the koolaid. If this guy allowed people who had broken into your home and stolen your goods, to sell them in his store where he got a percentage, you wouldn't think he's cool.

I understand that some of you are into the porn biz and many people have used MegaUploads for something illegal like selling your content or transferring it to others and that's why some might think that way, but come on the guy needs to live, we all do something illegal from time to time. I never drive at the speed limit either. :)

Copyright theft isn't - and we've already seen the knock-on effect from it.
Megauploads was created for and to support illegal downloads, that was the business model. Those sharing documents or their own copyright had many other options. There is absolutely nothing "cool" about the guy at all - he's a thief.

i would say this. unless kim dotcom actually uploaded copyrighted material himself, you really have to blame the uploaders for using the file lockers to share stuff and not only the site owners.

did he profit from the illegal exchange of copyrighted material...obviously he did.

was he the own that initially uploaded it...i can't be sure but i don't think he was.

in a loose way, its like he is the ski-mask maker and gun sales man...essential to the process of knocking over a 7-11 but not at all the main culprit. to me, the true criminals are always going to be the file locker users that willfully disregard copyrights and TOS agreements.

I don't know anything about him personally, but seeing his interviews, he seems like a very interesting and fairly charismatic guy. I was a big fan of megaupload and am glad that he not only was cleared of the charges against him but has brought back his website as well.
