The British composer John Tavener died today. He composed sacred music - in recent years inspired by his devotion to the eastern Orthodox faith.

The moment most people will recall his music from was the performance of the Song of Athene at the Funeral of Princess Diana.

The Whale was his first commercial recording, issued in the 1960s on the Beatles' Apple label.

The Protecting Veil may be his best work; his harmonic palette owes a lot to Messiaen but that isn't such a bad thing! He was very ill, but only 69 which isn't much these days.
