Wales didn't qualify, but here is the footie story of the day (from the BBC).

A grandfather is to net £125,000 after he placed a £50 bet on his grandson playing football for Wales - when he was 18 months old.

Sixteen-year-old Harry Wilson made his international debut on Tuesday as a substitute against Belgium, becoming Wales' youngest ever senior player.

His grandfather Peter Edwards, 62, was quoted odds of 2,500/1 when he placed the bet with a bookmaker in Wrexham.

He is now set to retire a year earlier than originally planned.

Wrexham-born Wilson came on in the 87th minute during Wales' 1-1 draw.

At 16 years and 207 days, the Liverpool midfielder was 108 days younger than previous record holder Gareth Bale, now the world's most expensive footballer following his recent move to Real Madrid.

There had been speculation that England were ready to try to persuade Wilson to switch international allegiance, but he opted for Wales.

Mr Edwards explained how he felt when Wilson made his appearance.

"I was shattered because I had to wait for 85, 86 minutes before he came on and I was panicking because they'd already substituted twice, so I thought he wasn't going to make it," he said.

"But when he came on I had another glass of wine. (I was) a proud granddad first for sure.

Mr Edwards said Wilson had showed an interest in football from a young age.

"When he was about 18 months old he used to chase a ball around on the carpet before he could walk," Mr Edwards said.

On the Chile front, I look forward to taking the piss out of you. For my sins as a Scot, I'm lumbered with England, unless Portugal make it through the play-offs.

Will anyone be able to afford to go? Prices are going through the roof and Romario has criticised FIFA for corruption while Brazil doesn't have the transport infrastructure to make reaching the venues easy for fans, and some of the stadia aren't finished...

Which? Article:
England fans who want to see their side in action at the 2014 FIFA World Cup are facing 'prohibitively expensive' hotel and flight prices, travel companies have warned.
The 2-0 victory over Poland last night has secured England's place at the tournament, but Which? Recommended Provider holiday companies warn fans are facing soaring accommodation prices and a battle to find a seat on exceptionally full internal flights.
A Trailfinders spokesperson said that the problem of finding accommodation would be particularly acute in Rio de Janeiro where hotel owners, used to dealing with high demand periods such as Carnival, are letting rooms to corporations for long periods.
As a result it will be very difficult for individuals to find accommodation in the city for one or two nights. A report in August by Brazil’s tourist board, Embratur, suggested that hotel prices could soar by up to 500 per cent in June and July 2014 in the 12 host cities.

Brazil 2014 World Cup prices

British Airways (BA) and Brazil’s TAM Airlines are the only airlines offering direct flights to Brazil from the UK. BA has not yet announced its World Cup flights, but the cost of a single fare on its daily Rio flight on 12 June 2014 is currently £1,425.

Once in Brazil, fans could face difficulty getting around to matches. The World Cup will take place in a total of 12 Brazilian cities, including Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, São Paulo and Fortaleza, and no team will be based at one venue during the group stages.
Internal flights between stadium venues are up to eight hours and demand for flights will be extremely high – many have already been block booked by FIFA.
Tickets for Brazil 2014

While tickets for Brazil are not likely to be as difficult to come by as previous world cups, demand is high. Even before last night’s victory, almost 100,000 England fans had applied for tickets. Sales reopen from 5-28 November.
Ticket prices for matches are substantial. As we highlighted in our previous conversation, a ticket for the opening match, featuring Brazil, will set you back roughly £143-£322.

I'm seriously considering going. IN-GER-LUND!!! I know some people in Brazil - maybe a house swap for a week or two?

Nikka - let's hope Jordan knocks off Uruguay in the playoff, or do all you South Americans pull for each other in qualifying? I can't stand another World Cup full of Suarez!

Will anyone be able to afford to go?

i'll be there. i'm working for a brasilian company based in los angeles doing 'a 10 seconds in the day of...' promotional campaign that will run during the world cup.

most of people i know in sao paulo are planning on getting out of the city due to how congested they anticipate it will get. sao paulo is already crowded as fuck without a world cup.
