Marina High Principal Paul Marrow praised his students for Campbell’s victory, saying, “Were proud of the message from home of the Vikings has been one of equity, acceptance, tolerance and respect.”

Earlier on Friday it was reported that Cassidy had been chosen as a finalist in the competition .

Leading up to the selection, Cassidy had been insistent that she hoped her effort would raise awareness and support for other transgendered teens.

"If I win, it would mean that the school recognizes me as the gender I always felt I was," Cassidy said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times . "But with all the attention, I realized it's bigger than me," she said. "I'm doing this for the kids who can't be themselves."

Marina High administrators have also received positive attention for their response to Cassidy’s campaign.

"If Marina High School is to make high-profile news during its homecoming week this year," Morrow said in a statement published by the Times, "then we are proud that the message is one of equity and individual respect."

I've read this story in multiple places; sadly the dickheads are still out and about.

I find it hard to believe there's that many accepting people in a high school. If it's legit it's legit, but this would be an amazing way to get your high school free publicity.

I was thinking the same thing when I thought of this other girl:

A Transgender Teen Becomes Homecoming Queen - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wezpHyP5VuI)

This girl in the Youtube video was actually Homecoming Princess though which is a JR in Highschool. So this other girl might be the first Homecoming "Queen" in the US. There's no comparison between the two though when you watch both videos.

Is she on hormones? I saw her Youtube videos. It doesn't appear that she is taking hormones.

She has only very recently made the move from drag to trans. Much like Diamond Kane, she's just at the start of her journey and I wish her the best of luck

Yahoo! News articles' comment sections make YouTube comments look like a symposium for greater understanding and sensitivity organized by Buddhist monks.

I usually read a few of them, then move on. Many of those comments gets my blood pressure up...

Considering the subject, I knew what type of comments were coming.

And, the same people are going to laugh and make mocking comments at the other video. The internet is the Wild West.

LOL are they are dominated by ultra conservative/christian fundamentalist.

YouTube has your typical trolls or sarcastic joksters in the comment sections and it gets a bad reputation but Yahoo! articles are filled with so much racism, transphobia, misogyny, homophobia, nationalism and fascism that it is really too sickening to even look at. The amount of transphobia and ignorance about transgender issues out there makes my blood boil. Its fucked up and wrong

To me she should of kept her life more private

It comes off very attention seeking

Which will bring resentment

If she wants to experience normalcy then don't air your dirty laundry

High school kids will only think she is doing it for fame

Rather than to just live a happy normal life

WendyWilliams

"happy normal life" ? Umm she is a teenager its all about social media and being "popular" If you follow her channel she started the vblogs talking about drag, makeup, shoes, clothes Everything A teenager is about. She took a break and came back transitioning.

I see nothing wrong with what she did and I don't think she was "airing her dirty laundry". Apparently her high school thought different since they elected her homecoming Queen.

She is young and will eventually understand that anytime you put yourself out there, people will judge.

She is only in high school and its all new and exciting. Let her learn from her mistakes and grow with them.

And there were comments from fellow TG sisters making harsh comments about her looks, she is very new to hormones so its sad to see people questioning her transition because of her "looks" with comments about her body etc.. She is NEWLY transitioning so any educated TS knows it takes time. Plus she is young and this is a perfect time for her to start her HRT.

BRAVO to her for being who she wants to be.

Wendy clearly you missed my point

My class voted me homecoming queen..boohoo..but nobody accepts me..oxymoron

She is calculated on her delivery..

There were no tears in the video yet she was crying her eyes out.

She even took time to edit the video and to tell people to rate, subscribe comment.

That's why girls are researching her and being critical.

She should be thrilled/happy and she should of stayed out of the media in the arms of her protective high school as it appears if she wasn't ready to face the backlash.

I mean she can't be that oblivious people weren't all going to be happy for her.

Instead she brings more hate by making a youtube video for attention.

Many girls think she is doing this to get fame rather than being her real self.

I got this from Sarina

No Kelly I didn't miss your point, just because I didn't agree with every point you made doesn't mean I "don't get it".

She is in HIGH SCHOOL for Gods sake, we are grown ass adults. This is just another way of bullying, being catty, etcc

And many others think she is sincere. Guess it goes both ways.

Anyhow she will learn and hopefully grow.

Something I wrote on another forum with regard to this:

I figured that was probably what he was referring to, but I haven't actually watched the video -- just heard about it -- so I didn't want to assume.

In that case, the girl in question basically had the dream of every 16 or 17 year old girl realized: to be crowned home coming queen. In the scheme of things it's an inconsequential and frivolous honor, but again, for a teen girl, that is a big fucking deal. And in this girl's case that exciting and happy moment was completely and utterly ruined by backlash over... what? That she's different than most home coming queens? Who the fuck cares? Why is it a big deal? Why is it so awful that it was worth ruining what was supposed to be a pretty happy moment for a teen girl?

Sure, she's not a "real girl", but the thing tranny haters forget is that with a transsexual, what's between the tranny's legs is pretty irrelevant to how the tranny perceives and reacts to the world. Imagine, if you will, a girl who was mildly overweight was crowned home coming queen, and suddenly the hordes of the internet descended upon her to make fun of her weight, and talk about how in their day only a hot chick with a perfect body who was fucking the football team captain would ever win homecoming or prom queen. I think, in such a case, everyone would think treating the girl in such a way was incredibly fucked up, and would recognize that that would be a pretty grievous and humiliating injury to the girl. But because this particular girl has a penis between her legs, clearly she "is a man" and thus won't find such comments upsetting and is totally fair game.

Again, it comes down to the lack of empathy: a refusal to grant the possibility that the transsexuals perspective might be valid, and thus superimposing your own perspective onto the transsexual. No one would treat a teen girl this way because they know that's not how you treat girls, and that such treatment would be horribly cruel and injurious to a teen girl, in a way that it wouldn't be if you were dealing with, say, a 24 year old male. I don't know if inhumane is the correct word, but cruel and mean-spirited certainly, and utterly discouraging for the transsexuals watching on the sidelines.
