View Full Version : Eisoptrophobia - What's your phobia?

I just wanted to share my phobia today. I have the fear of seeing myself in the mirror or esioptrophobia. Everyday I wake up sometimes it takes me hours to actual go into the bathroom because of the fear of seeing that person in the mirror. When I wake up I feel literally like a girl so to actually see myself as someone different before I get ready it feels really frightening. I don't feel like a girl trapped in a guy's body. I feel like a girl and then realize I'm trapped in a guy's body.

I think this comes from my mom because she has the same thing. She has a fear of seeing herself in pictures and there's barely any photos of her. The only photo I've seen of her by herself was her high school photo.

So does anyone else have any phobia's?

i think that is basically typical of all TS's, not a literal "phobia".

"Esioptrophobia", what seems most logical to me, is most likely something that springs forth from fear of "vampires" and "ye olde superstitions".

Not too long ago ( before science was well known and accepted ) a very big fear a vampires was real. Not because of Bram Stoker, but because of "Yersinia Pestis", AKA the "Black Death". Later, Vlad the Impaler, and then Bram's book and with that, the people panic, rumors ensue and then become bent and misconstrued to the point of "blood sucking", "turning into bats", "werewolves", "witches", "black cats", "omens" and of coarse "No reflection".

Phobophobia. Its a doozy. Accounts for a lot my sentences beginning with, "How the hell do I get out of this", usually followed by, "How the the hell did get into this on the first place".

Love long and proper.

It is a phobia if I can't look into the mirror because of fear. It extends farther out than just vampires in modern times. People have sometimes have unexplainable phobia's.

Stoker wrote Dracula at the end of the 19th century. Vampires weren't much of a topic in Western Europe or the rest of the world at that time. Part of the reason his book became popular was because he based the character on an historical character and used real real towns and castles in Transylvania as a back-drop.

In some parts of Eastern Europe the vampire legends continues on through today. I saw this in Romania when I was there.

To your original point about Esioptrophobia, aren't ALL phobias rooted in some primal fear? I mean everything we have today is based in something from yesterday which is based on something from the day before, etc going back to our origins. The object on which we centre that fear - such as mirrors - may be different though.

I believe most phobia's are created when you're a child and experience something you thought was traumatic at the time though in reality was probably not traumatic at all in the grand scheme of things.

I have also heard that children that look up to their parents may mimic their fears or phobia's at an early age. Take for instance that your dad freaks out seeing a spider when you are very young. This can be very traumatic for you at an early age because young kids often look up to their parents or adults as godly figures so you instinctively feel you should fear that same thing or develop a phobia.

I only have 3 real fears.

Spiders. Legit, because MANY can kill you and they are simply creepy.

Bugs. Legit, because they are creepy, disgusting, and literally, there are more bugs within 1 sq. mile of land then the whole entire human population on earth. Ewww.

Heights. Legit, because one can fall....and die.

I had the same problem before transition. To this day, I still hate editing my own photos. Speaking of photos, I take more now in a month than I did in my entire previous life.

It gets better.

spiders and dying alone. Not just dying and nobody being there but dying and not having anyone that will feel the loss of a friend or loved one.

i can see where you having those fears Lily, being as though its only been 2 months. The beginning is the worst but it gets better.

3 years for me fulltime and hormones.

The feeling of pariah goes away as time goes by once you become more in tune with your hormones, body, mind, and confidence.

Your "phobia" will vanish and your confidence will succeed.

Claustrophobia - comes and goes although I don't understand why that is. Might be because I deliberately stay away from small enclosed places.

Oddly traveled for years on planes - sometimes several times a year - without incident. Then a few years back was on a small jet and had major anxiety. I just talked myself down. Went to sleep and survived it without panicking. Had it happen too on the subway for the first time a few years ago (after decades of taking the subway without incident) but again managed to overcome without getting off.

I find that trying to rationalize the fear helps in overcoming it.

Acrophobia is the irrational fear of heights and falling.

I don't have the phobia as such, but I do have clinical vertigo, which means that in certain situations where great height is involved, even safely inside a building, I can become disoriented, lose my balance and fall over. OK on ski-lifts but not in cable cars; I have to shut my eyes and hold on to the central pole for the duration. Fine in aircraft.

It's all to do with inner ear disturbance - I suffer from migraines and travel sickness too.

Fly's live about 1 day. But get this. I heard that if fly's lived 1 week. The whole earth would be covered in fly's a foot thick. Seems amazing when you think about that. Yuck :hide-1:

I have serious Rupophobia. It's not even dirt per se that I'm afraid of. I'm fine with dirt in general, I love walking barefoot in the mud. My issue is organic filth. Moldy things, rot, slime, decomposing things... just the sight makes me feel physically ill and weak. It's not like I'm germaphobic or anything, I just don't want to actually see filth.
