Andrew Garfield stumps for a gay Spider-Man: 'Why can't he be into boys?'

Andrew Garfield (http://movies.msn.com/celebrities/celebrity/andrew-garfield/) wants to see Spider-Man with another man.
"The Amazing Spider-Man (http://movies.msn.com/movies/movie/the-amazing-spider-man.3/)" star Garfield told Entertainment Weekly (http://insidemovies.ew.com/2013/07/10/andrew-garfield-spider-man-gay/) that he would imagine his tights-clad character in a relationship with a guy, and even has a thought as to whom could play his love interest.

According to Garfield, he broached the possibility during a talk with "Amazing Spider-Man" producer Matt Tolmach.
"I was kind of joking, but kind of not joking about MJ," Garfield said, referring to the nickname of Peter Parker's girlfriend, Mary Jane Watson. "And I was like, 'What if MJ is a dude?' Why can't we discover that Peter [Parker] is exploring his sexuality? It's hardly even groundbreaking! ... So why can't he be gay? Why can't he be into boys?"
As for whom Garfield could see Spidey hooking up with, the actor thinks "Friday Night Lights" alumnus Michael B. Jordan would be an ideal choice.

"I've been obsessed with Michael B. Jordan since 'The Wire,'" Garfield said. "He's so charismatic and talented. It'd be even better --we'd have interracial bisexuality!"
There have been gay comic-book characters before, including iterations of the Rawhide Kid, Batwoman and the Green Lantern.

A gay Spiderman would be lame.
Everybody knows Spidey is neck deep in MJ's butt. She could come out as a transgirl, that would be OK, but to break up Spiderman and Mary Jane would be fucked up.

The Green Lantern is gay. Batman is Bi, and Superman is a boring straight guy.

i actually agree. spiderman is already known to have a thing for mary jane. why not create a new superhero who is gay or take one who doesn't have a love interest and give him a love interest?

besides- whatever happened to these guys? they were pretty fucking amazing

There's a lot of this happening lately, not just with gay/straight/bi, but also gender or race. There was a huge fuss being made over the possiblity of a black man playing the human torch in the next Fantastic Four movie, and Will Smith is remaking Annie, with the little girl from "Beasts of the Southern Wild" as Annie, and changing "Daddy Warbucks" to "Benjamin Stacks." The latter is just lame.

It's not like it's a new concept to switch things around, people have taken Shakespeare characters and adjusted them for gender, sexual preference, and race. The only issues I really have are two. 1) Does it make sense when telling the story, and 2) is the original variation so fresh and loved that it does a disservice to the material on which it was based.

That said, there's no real reason to make Spiderman gay from a story point. And even if you did, the character is so known and loved by the fanboy set, that it would probably do more to drive them away than make them see the movie, it's not the character they know. If it's not Peter Parker as Spiderman, and some whole new character taking over, probably a better match for exploration of a character who is gay. But if you are talking Peter Parker, he damn well better be into Mary Jane Watson, or the boys in their mother's basements are going to throw fits.

All true fans know his real true love was Gwen and MJ just filled the void left by her death. Even clever writing wouldn't be able to put a man or Ts in the origin story of spiderman without it being in an alternate universe. And it still wouldn't work because some things should be left well enough alone. There are already enough Ultimate universe and movie universe character changes to keep Hollywood busy killing our favorite comics for years to come

The Godfather? You don't disrespect that movie like that!!!! That to me would be a boycot of the new one. Although, I wish they'd remake the 3rd one, at least into something decent.
