Eh...I usually visit friends and family. We then would go to a random casino and just hangout.

I will admit Blue Man Group was pretty good.

Go see Absinthe at Caesars Palace, best show out there now. It's hysterical and has some crazy acrobatics in a very tight space. If you like Cirque de Soliel shows, the Beatles one is good and so is KA, but a performer just fell and died at KA so make sure its actually still performing. It may be shut down.

For people watching, Chandelier Bar at Cosmo.

If you gamble, go downtown or to a locals casino. I recommend the D and Golden Gate downtown, Red Rock if you don't mind going way off strip.

For hiking find the trails out by Red Rock or in Mountain's Edge. Some gorgeous country, but if you're coming soon mind the heat. It's been pretty close to 115 degrees for the better part of a week and that's not good weather to be outside in.

The best bars are now downtown, on Fremont East. The Griffin, Commonwealth, Insert Coin on Fremont, and a bunch of other ones who's names elude me now on Main. Velveteen Rabbit is pretty cool, and Frankie's Tiki Room is an insanely fun time. Hogs and Heifers is ok if you like the Coyote Ugly type thing.

Clubs I'd go with XS or Surrender if you're by yourself. They aren't dicks about having to have a large party of women with you to get in. You'll have to wait to get in, but at least you will eventually get in. All the rest bitch and moan about solo males or groups of males unless you're buying a table. If you're determined to chase you can try 1OAK, I've always seen more TS women there than anywhere else, but I personally hate the club and its music. It's just JET with a paint job.

Pools are good too. Pool Parties operate the same as the clubs, so I'd stick with Encore Beach Club. Same reason as XS and Surrender, they won't hassle you too much about being solo. For hotel pools most require you to stay there unless you go off strip. Red Rock has a nice one, and so does the M resort on the far south end of the strip.

For food, you'd have to let me know what you like. If you want a buffet you have to go with Bacchanal Buffet at Caesars. It's insanely large and has so many selections you'll not want to leave. But it is pricey.

Good luck!

Oh, to the OP, if you're coming out here soon be mindful of where you go. We have a huge wildfire on Mt. Charleston that's dumping smoke in the whole valley, so if you have asthma or any lung issues you may want to stay indoors. It also kills some of the hiking you might want to do as Red Rock trails go up that way too.

Such a shame, Mt. Charleston is absolutely beautiful. If you come out here in winter its a great time to head up to the mountain and get a cottage.

Avoid The Heat!!!!!

That's what the Spurs should've done lol...

Seriously, with all of that smoke (I DO have asthma) AND the heat, I wouldn't be doing too much walking around outside in the first place. I'd most likely be inside one of the casinos chillin', watching folks lose their money and/or dining with Mya or Carmen Moore haha.

Maybe I could get together with you Clark County folk to buy THIS...it would make a great party pad!

I absolutely detest Liberace's music, but his museum was actually pretty fun to see. And if you haven't seen it yet, the Pinball Museum is the shit!

Although if we bought Liberace's pad, you think we could rent it out to all the porn producers and make some profit? For only a half million its actually decently priced, lol.

I met Penn Jillete in Wal-Mart a couple years ago, he is absolutely hysterical and a really nice guy to boot. I'd imagine most people don't want to be bothered in Wal-Mart at 2am but my girl at the time just had to have a pic with him and he was very nice to us.

Blue Man Group is always good. Carrot Top gets a bad rap, but his show was hysterical. Penn & Teller was amazing. There are like five different Cirque Du Solei shows, they're all the same thing, but seeing one is good.

It's been a few years, but I remember the Wynn golf course was pretty good too.

Definately avoid, the Star Trek experience, its too fucking overpriced and if you aren't into it, there's nothing there for you. Even the themed restaurant is a rip-off. Avoid any prostitute on a card, or in the hotel bars. LVPD sometimes do stings with these, go with known well reviewed entities. Avoid the monorail too. It's kind of pointless, cabs and/or walking get you everywhere else faster. And unless you're going to be a regular and looking to go places on the cheap, avoid the dive casinos that aren't on the Strip or Freemont St. If you're going for the Vegas experience, you're better off at a big hotel.

Don't have to worry about going to The Star Trek Experience. It has been closed for several years.

I prefer going to the off strip casinos rather than on the strip. If it is your first time in Las Vegas, ok than spend your time on the Strip.

My general rule is that when the waitress bums money off you to play blackjack in between bringing you your drink and when you order it, its a dive. And Terrible's...still pretty terrible.

Last time (only time) I went to vegas, I went by airplane, got in a taxi, and went to my reserved hotel room at the Excalibur.

Pardon the naive questions:
I've never actually driven in to Las Vegas, what is the best way to approach it, in the sense of showing up , getting a room on the strip?

Do the Hotel Casinos have parking for my car? In other words can I drive up to the Mandalay bay and park in a garage and go up to the hotel lobby and rent a room for couple of nights?

Do I need to reserve the rooms in advance? We are doing a "winging it" type of trip and don't know if we will show up Monday 22nd of July or 23rd. Is it possible to get a room on the strip on the same day or are they usually sold out in advance?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Whenever I've gone to Vegas it has been a drive in "wingin it" type of trip, lol. I think the thing about the strip is that unless there is a convention happening, there is always an available room,...wherever you might want to stay. If not, I'd be willing to bet that next door is available....and you are showing up on a weekday so no doubt just pick where you would like to be.

I've also found by doing the old "I had a room booked next door but it won't be available untill later, what can you do for me" trick has always worked for a great rate.

Many or all of the casinos do have parking garages. The last time I was there I stayed at Treasure Island, and they sure did. I've stayed at Mandalay Bay before, but not with a car.

I'd advise reservations, but I suspect that if you show up with no reservations, getting a room won't be a problem.

Lucky for me I have relatives who live in the city haha. I usually drive in anyway; don't want to deal with the drama at McCarran. Also, since I don't gamble too much AND like going to off-strip casinos (like Red Rock), it's great to have my own ride. When I AM on the strip, I usually park at Caesars or The Wynn and foot it,

When downtown I park in one of the garages...usually the one on the corner of Carson and Las Vegas...no problems yet!

When a hotel says they don't have any rooms, they're probably lying. Still, it IS best to plan ahead; anything could happen. ive been lucky; I usually seem to get a room at Echelon on every try without any problems!

I'd recommend reservations just because its cheaper, but if you don't mind spending a bit extra every casino has rooms available every night of the week. The only time I can think that every casino is booked is big weekends like Labor Day/Memorial Day, NYE, and maybe during CES. Every casino has parking somewhere, but once you park on the Strip I recommend leaving your car wherever you parked at and walking it. It'll be much quicker, safer, and more fun. If you're in a hurry take a cab, let them take the risks and they know backroads that the tourists don't use too much.

Most of your post was accurate, however these ideas not so much. Carrot Top is terrible, you will want to off yourself as you walk out the door for paying to see that twat.

The Wynn golf course is also pretty much crap, unless you're referring to Shadow Creek, his original one. Also I'd rather play Rio Secco than the Wynn course. Greens are nicer and much more fun. Fees used to be cheaper as well, but its been about 2 years since I could take out the irons.

As for the casinos off the Strip and Fremont, I'd have to disagree with you again. Stay out of any of the ones on the East side, like Sam's Town or Eastside Cannery, but any Stations Casino isn't bad (other than maybe Boulder Station). Rampart is pretty nice, Suncoast isn't bad, South Point and the Silverton are very nice, the M resort is absolutely gorgeous and as good as Red Rock in my opinion. Green Valley Ranch is also very nice. I've heard Alliante is nice as well, but that's too far north for my tastes. If you want to find young drunk kids and idiot tourists that believe the nonsense about Vegas being no hold's barred, stay on the strip, if you want to enjoy your cocktails, get a good percentage on your gambling, and eat very well for half the price...go local.

A nice little post on Downtown Las Vegas: http://todayinlv.com/2013/07/the-rebirth-of-downtown-las-vegas/

I took my folks to Aliante Station the last time they were there. Yes it's out in the boonies (have they finished the CC-215 yet?) but they LOVED it. The Salted Lime is a pretty nice restaurant, as is Bistro 57.

Speaking of the Stations, I've notice the newer the place, the better. Palace and Boulder are ugh, while Sunset and Aliante are pretty nice.

I've gotta check out M. Of course I always pass it on the way into town, but I've never stopped there. Hmm...

Ben,

Dude, go to the M. It's really nice. Especially the pool. The Main pool is huge and lots of hot women, and if you want the pool party they have Daydream just behind the main pool bar. You can thank me later.

Anthony's Steakhouse is really good as well. Carl and Kenny at the bar are hysterical and Kenny can guide you through the best meal you will have in Vegas.

Hostile Grape is a great wine bar downstairs. Very extensive selection, pricing isn't bad either.

The buffet is the highest rated one in Vegas other than Caesars, and they didn't have to spend $15 million to get it that way like Caesars did either. Again, you'll thank me later.

And yes, the older the Stations casino, the shittier, but even Texas and Palace Station aren't bad compared to the east side ones.

I second that. I went to their show back in April and they picked me out of the audience for one of their tricks. Maybe it was my Pearl Harbor Hawaiian shirt that caught Penn's eye :)

There about a half dozen tricks where they used people people from the audience ...

There are conferences and industry shows in Vegas throughout the year, some will be for specialists but some are open to the public like the Consumer Electronics Show which opens on Tuesday the 7th January and is the kind of thing I would like to go to -I think there is a technology fair in Singapore too later in the year. However I think it costs $200 to register as an attendee, I guess it all depends on how keen you are on the latest technology.

Some 'Hollywood stars' also attend though I didn't recognise any of the ones referred to here:
