The film mentioned in the article (English title: "My Life In Pink") is a pretty good look at just this sort of thing. Ludivic, the boy/girl in the story is about eight years old and goes through quite a lot of trauma as his parents try to figure out how to cope with the situation while the surrounding community tangles with its own gender recognition issues.
The film has a surprising and happy ending. :)
