Metal, in its various guises, swamps every other genre in the What Are You Listening To Now thread.

I'd be up for a thread which caters for music which depends slightly less on volume, guitar pyrotechnics and satanism, and more on melody and intelligible lyrics.

Anyone else?

A great song about exile from Scotland. I used to do this solo on mandolin. Brought the house down every time. And I still choke at the line "Say goodbye to the Clyde and all the yards". One day.....

My all-time songwriting hero and inspiration, Ralph McTell, singing in his kitchen. It was listening to him that persuaded me to pick up a guitar for the very first time. So now you all know who to blame....

This song could have been written by Thomas Hardy. A ten-year old girl put it best, "He paints pictures in my head."

I stand corrected, old friend. And you know I'm joking. As we've discovered, we actually have a lot of music in common, somewhere in the deep vein of Americana.

Must try you out on some of mine some time - be warned though, I can make Leonard Cohen sound like the entire cast of Glee on amphetamines.

Appropriately eclectic and quirky, Ms French. Loved the knowing bubblegum of your own effort - great vid too.

I've never dropped acid, but Primus gave me a pretty good idea of what it might be like. I know the Tom Waits - and love it - and know of There Might Be Giants. Corn Mo was great till the singing started. Liked Lysergic, and Dschingis Khan was a mashup of Abba, Boney M and an eastern European Eurovision entry circa 2002.

It was his posting of this song on the What are you listening to? thread that gave me the idea of a thread for music with tunes. Thanks buddy.

In terms of pure pop this is as good as it gets - the song, the singer, the arrangement. And as for the demented trumpet solo at the end, I think the guy probably blew his liver out lol

My sister was so into music she got a part time job nights minimum wage selling CDs and t-shirts downstairs, just so she could abandon her post and hear free music and meet all the musicians personally. Country, bluegrass, Texas music, she had a big crush on the guy who married Julia Roberts. Lyle Lovett. She met the Dixie Chicks when Dad drove them around in his station wagon, they all liked the John Prine music, some of the guys Robert has posted but I can never remember. The guy who owned the place sold it and now it is crap.

"Beautiful film, beautiful soundtrack. I have both the DVD and the CD."

Great director. 21 grams is probably his best film, but Amores Pecores, Babel and Bioutiful are also very good movies! With 21 grams, it's the constant existential questions that is so compelling. But you know, I think Amores Pecores, although much more violent and crazy, meant pretty much the same thing, but for a public that has to go through much more than we do, the Mexicans... Alejandro Gonzlez Irritu is a great director. But after Babel, I'm not sure we'll see much more coming out Hollywood...

It was a terrible critique (blame? denounciation?) of the American way of seeing the world. A banal incident in a remote country has consequences on people from so many other countries just because the victim was American. To me, it was brilliantly made! And so courageous! But they got it in Hollywood! We won't see anything from Innaritu with a real big budget. That's one of the thing I admire of the guy: no matter what the cost was, he delivered his message. That's an artist. You know, Diogenes used to say: "What's the use of an artist or a philosopher who doesn't hurt anybody's feelings?" :)

Oh! you meant Motorcycle Diaries, Robert Louis? Well, just the topic was fabulous! You know, when I think of all what was made of Marx's work, I just stop to think about the unimaginably horrible condition of life of people, during the so-called "second industrial Revolution", in the XIXth century. Very few authors had the courage (and the empathy) of talking about it. Men working 16 hours a day, 6 days a week in abominable conditions, women 12 to 14, children as young as 6 or 8, 8 hours a day, sometimes suspended over the machines, tortured, and all of that for just enough to barely survive; you put the whole body of work of Marx in a whole other context. What other author talked about it? Dickens. In french, Zola, Hugo. Well, to me, Motorcycle Diaries does the same for Ernesto Guevara: what got him there? It's this travel! Beautiful movie!!!

Of course, Prospero, I'm not defending the communists and especially not their methods. Of course not! What I'm talking about, is the intention of the author. Marx didn't know any of what the crazy, lunatics in Russia would do with his writings. But what I'm saying is that his whole body of work was motivated by this unbelievable, obscene poverty and the system that allowed it. Now, for Guevara, the same was shown with the movie by Walter Salles. How this trip of his youth inspired him what he would do later on and what he would die for, maybe not doing the right thing (robbing Bolivian peasants is undefendable), but it explains his motives.
As to 21 grams, yes, Prospero, please, watch this one again, and keep in mind it's by a Mexican director...

John Sebastian's later solo stuff is pretty good too, but it would sadly be true to say that those magic few years of the Spoonful saw him hit heights of joyful songwriting unmatched by most since. Master of keeping it all deceptively simple and the less is more school of lyric writing.

I'll sometimes chuck this one into a set because it's easy to play and packs a real emotional punch.

Mornin'

Paul Simon's masterly trilogy of songs about America, the American dream and the human experience. Three songs from three different albums, spread over 20 years, but there's a theme and a longing that unites them.

Play nicely now kiddies or Uncle Prospero will be along to give you a spanking.....

This is one of my favourite pieces of music in any repertoire. Sadly I couldn't find the John Eliot Gardiner version, which to my ear sounds the most emotionally and musically clear, but you should get the idea. It's sublime; the entire second movement of Brahms' Ein Deutsches Requiem.

Unlike almost every other Requiem Mass, this eschews the Latin liturgy and instead uses text from the Lutheran bible, hence the German Requiem title.

Gerry started out in a duo called the Humblebums with THAT Billy Connolly, doing the rounds of the folk clubs in Scotland.

When Bill moved on to become the master of stand-up, Gerry had a couple of bands including Stealer's Wheel before settling in to a pretty successful solo career. Sadly drank too much and it killed him last year.
