What rank did you get to?
What part of the military (or police) and which country?).

Some years ago when I was trying to do some research into gender and sexuality, I came across an article which suggested a substantial number of the people who apply to begin the process that ends with SRS had been in the armed forces. They may not be the kind of transexuals who make money from the entertainment or sex industries, but numerically I believe a high proportion of transexuals have been in the military. This must probably include people from countries which have national service.

I know from personally meeting a lot of the girls we work with - as well as seeing their IDs (some of them still using military ID's) how many there are.

I served in the U.S. Navy stationed in Japan on the USS Fitzgerald DDG-62 ( Destroyer ).

I was a Gunnersmate Petty Officer 3rd class. ( E-4 )
Specialty - VLS ( Vertical Launch Missile System ) Technician.

Want to know WHY I got out? lol
Had a 4 yr contract BUT I wanted to start my transition, and felt trapped and couldn't wait any longer otherwise I was going to crack. So 2.5 years in I got out voluntarily with an Honorable discharge.
Exact reason I got out - Transgender. :)

I saw most of Asia. Japan, Okinawa, Guam, Hong Kong, Korea, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.

I went to school with a TS who was in the military. I think she served in the army.

Brittany St. Jordan was a marine.

Other than that...I'd don't know anyone else who was in the military.

It's a very interesting question, and thanks both to Seanchai for asking it and the women for responding.

Blanchard amongst others suggested that transwomen who transition later, (basically over the age of 20 or so) will often have had very masculine jobs, careers or interests and the hypothesis is that they were fighting against their gender ID for reasons of social acceptance, family expectation and peer pressure, so push themselves into these roles...then they just can't hold out any longer and transition rather rapidly thereafter. (I think a lot of Blanchard's conclusions are questionable, but this one seems plausible.)

I'd be interested in hearing the girls' take on that.
