View Full Version : Who is Your Favourite Action Hero?

Stavros

As Iron Man 3 debuts I wonder if members consider Robert Downey Jr to be an 'action her' so I have not included him in the poll (and it is his alter-ego who is the action hero anyway).

Also, there are actors from the past who did more than action films like John Wayne, Lee Marvin, Clint Eastwood -no nonsense tough guys etc- but not on the list, their films were more diverse as were their skills.

Anyway, Jason Statham gets my vote because the films are watchable, he has a sense of humour, is not overbearing and arrogant like Stallone, or a figure worthy only of ridicule, like Seagal.

Your choice.

i always considered statham to be exactly the type of guy you meet @ a pub in london being loud with a bunch of rugby players.

as far as superheros: maybe the toxic avenger. but for this poll: lundgren (for the punisher + master's of the universe)

I don't think Clint Eastwood, Lee Marvin, etc. were "action heroes" - they were tough guys but often didn't take much action.

Bruce Willis is the only action hero from the time of the classic 80's/90's action movies who has stood the test of time and can still pull it off. Why? Because he's the only one we can identify with more than the mumbling, or mono-syllable, steroid machines.

No Chow Yun Fat, no Jet Li, no Gordon Liu, and no Michelle Yeoh.

It is simple, I was writing down the list and his name never entered my head, perhaps because he has been away from films for so long. In any case, I don't see how anyone could rate Schwarzenegger above Popeye, the sailor man's charisma and his cute girlfriend alone win that contest.

Should I have included Tin-Tin?

Bruce Lee, hands down. While with the exception of Enter the Dragon (which was still relatively low budget) most of his movies lacked the production values, screenwriting, cinematography, etc. of the later stars' films, he was, imho, far and away the better fighter (excepting perhaps the sadly omitted Jet Li and Chow Yun Fat). But more important was his influence. Prior to Lee, TV and movie hand-to-hand fighting was old school roundhouse boxing: big right hook, left jab, knockout punch to a glass chin, etc. After Lee, virtually every fight scene on TV or in the cinema featured (however poorly or well choreographed) some form of kung fu or karate, from Carradine's Kung Fu to Woorf on Star Trek to Buffy the Vampire Slayer to an endless run of movies starring Seagal, Norris, van Damm. Lee's influence on fighting on film is equivalent to Hendrix' influence on electric guitar: the entire genre changed profoundly.

I'll give Statham the nod. His stuff is believable. (Well, most of the action sequences, anyway. The "Crank" films are a bit out there.)

Plus, he's going to play Parker- film comes out soon- that's a good character and a decent little series of pulp novels. I'm giving him extra credit for that.

I'd watch that. I have the Bollywood version of Nightmare on Elm Street called Mahakaal. It's an hour longer than NoES because they had to fit all the song and dance numbers in.

Even funnier, Schwarzenegger actually did a movie called "The Last Action Hero" as a nod to the fact that he had become the exemplar of what was considered an action hero. It's like asking about the best George Lucas movie and not including Star Wars.

Another omission: Matt Damon in his Jason Bourne persona. Great films to watch, especially the second and third, directed by Paul Greengrass.

I would have included at least Daniel Craig and Connery from Bond and Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones - some of the most rollicking action adventures of the lot.

With the exception of the two Bruces and, of course, Popeye, the rest are just mouth-breathing meatheads.

Statham would make a lousy Bond, he can barely speak the few lines he gets in his mentally undemanding [for an actor, as well as the audience] movies as it is

Whereas, Norris wouldve roundhouse kicked Trevor Sorbie's ass on the hairdressing front

If it was a list of action hero Characters your idea might have traction, but Matt Damon is more versatile so you fail on this test. Same with Bond, Indiana Jones, and Ethan Hunt of course -I think had I included Tom Cruise as an action hero there would have been even more protests.

I do watch action films, without being an expert. There is scope for an alternative list, one that would include the more esoteric figures. I was once told that The Fate of Lee Khan is the best kung fu/martial arts movie ever made, but most people have neither seen it nor heard of it.

Your move.

Excellent Choises Dino! I love the Kung Fu flicks, and own all three of those. Another great one, albeit harder to find, "Return to the 36th Chamber" starring Gordon Liu! It doesn't have eyeballs popping out, or the eye candy, but a great flick!

I'm a fan of action movies and like them all.

I think 85-95 was the best period for action movies when many of those listed (and Arnie) were at the peak of their power.

I watched "Hard Target" with JCVD the other weekend and had forgotten how good some of his movies were back then.
