Am I the only person who gets these guitar players mixed up? Starting to think they're all the same person like Heather Thomas and Heather Locklear.

Nah man, Yngwie is fat, Satriani is bald, and Vai is tall and scrawny.

I'm pretty sure you can differentiate the three...they have different styles and different sounds. Of the three you mention, If I'm just going to listen to solo guitar all night, I would prefer Satriani, followed closely by Vai in preference.
I remember when Malmsteen started with Alcatrazz...saw them at a pier show(followed by Ted Nugent if I recall correctly). Malmsteen seemed outrageously fast at the time but his noodling gets boring fast.He went off on his own and was replaced by Steve Vai for a bit. Vai played with a lot of different bands that I listen to....as far as live performances- I believe I saw him play at a Halloween show with Frank Zappa...a long ,long time ago.
I believe Steve Vai has the most distinctive sound of the three and can probably play with almost anyone.
But for just strictly guitar tunes, again ...I would pick Satriani.

..Anyway,that's what I remember.

Good post. Thanks. I'd throw Ritchie Blackmore somewhat into the same category as he likes to masturbate with his Stratocaster too.

All of them can play the shit out of a guitar yet none of them can write a song worth remembering so yeah... they are all the same guy. Besides, Bucket Head is the only one of those types of guitar players that's worth remembering.

I AGREE DINO ! ! ! ! ! Every "widdlywiddlywiddlywiddlywiddly Weeeeeeem!" guitar center hero could stand to learn a thing or two about melody and modesty from the great Merle Travis:

I agree with jamie.

Only good guitarist ever is Ace Frehley. I rather listen to Shock me than all of satriani's , malmsteen's, and Vai's albums put together.

I've seen a few interviews with people who have worked with Malmsteen who say he is an arrogant dick head. Satriani seems pretty cool, I think he was in the Motorhead documentary that came out last year and he seemed really down to Earth, haven't heard too much about Vai.

I agree completely. All the talent in the world but if you can't create a catchy hook or melody then you fade back into the pack so to speak.

I went to school with Steve Vai, very nice guy, was a rock star before he was a rock star. You young bucks should check out Roy Buchanan, he could make his guitar sing, and was slinging the blues down and dirty when those other hipsters were just pups.

Definitely many great guitarists and I like a lot of Vai & Satriani's stuff.
There's a good reason the 2 Italians sound alike: Joe taught Steve how to play.
Malmsteen hasn't really changed at all over the years.
Vai worked for Zappa and adds some of Frank's odd time signatures into his act which is interesting.

Esteban - used to play at a Hyatt in Scottsdale. Great show to take a date.

If ya got 12 minutes to spare, check out Bangkok from Vai's "Fire Garden" CD. Nice composition.
