I think I have 0 min in over 5 Oscars

One show way back there I was forced to watch by my GF at the time, I think it was my Final Insult (as in Naked Gun 33 1/3) as in "It is the Bomb" where "Sawdust & Mildew" took the honors

Seriously, what a waste of time. Just having to hear everyone talk about it this morning was boring me to death.

my my my!

It's just the industry patting itself on the back for both crappy/good successful/failure movies and actors.

I rather watch paint dry.

I used to watch the Oscars religiously, but for the past few years, I've been much more "meh". Now I mostly just cruise the internet the next AM to see who wore what and that's about it. There is just no more drama about who will win anymore.

I hated being forced to watch them as a kid.
Have never watched them from the day I was allowed to find something better to do.

I didn't watch at all.

Didn't watch the Grammys either, but I've watched Taylor Swift's opening performance on YouTube at least 20 times. Damn, that girl is fine.

I didn't watch them but I heard Dame Shirley Bassey performed, so I will be looking for that performance on youtube.

I've never watched it in my life. I like to spend the Oscars at home eating two large pizzas, a box of creampuffs, box of eclairs, and an apple pie, with my little 20lb french bulldog watching black and white 70's Russian war movies.

i watched it. personally, if there is 1 award show i'd rather would watch, it's the oscars. the real question is, who here watched the tranny awards but proudly swears against all other award shows?

I watched it, like I do most years. Its tradition and its a fun break for the usual routine. You get to see clips form moves, guess who might win and stack up the movies you saw compared to the others. A few nip slips and see which stars are dead or alive.

I don't see why the hate. One day out of 300 not to watch a bunch of millionairs chasing a ball.

Why would anybody watch it?? i really dont get that at all unless you are involved. Do i want to watch in on any of your alls meetings at work for employee of the month, year, lifetime service awards? lol. Its astonishing to me how serious our culture takes these idiots we help to overpay and keep them in nice rides and in drug habits and ride around in jets telling us we should be better to the environment. hehe.

I spent my time yesterday working on pictures, streaming random stuff on Apple TV, and watching DVDs of movies I actually like, but had no chance of winning any awards...then or now.

that's exactly how i feel about porn. many people follow things happening in porn even though they're not involved nor have anything to gain out of it.
personally, i watch the oscars as entertainment news, especially being in the entertainment industry.

It's only available on satellite over here and I won't buy anything tainted by Rupert Murdoch.

And in any case, the anticipation greatly exceeds the event. The BBC summary told me all I needed to know and gave me another five hours of sleep.

why would anyone watch an award show? especially the oscars... movie trailers every time you open a browser, endless commercials on tv, in magazines and 1/2 hour worth of ads when you sit in the theater. there are maybe 5 actors who at times can be somewhat believable, even robert de niro hasn't done anything noteworthy in almost 20 years... to be fair, as a sports fan the espy's are also unwatchable although at least you can respect someone who actually competes

Over hyped awards. Cannes is probably a better read of what was the most notable work in film in any given year. Lot's of industry politics involved with the Oscars.

Just the facts that Woody Allen never bothers to show up, that Al Pacino is so often over looked and half the time best film is hard to stay awake through is all you need to know about the Academy, it is extension of an industry full of contradictions and scizonfrencally trying to balance there love of profit and admiration of art.

Just my take

I'll watch if movies I care about have been nominated, but most years, it's a bunch of movies I haven't seen and don't care about.

Although the Baftas do give us the cherishable Stephen Fry. But even his company palls after the second hour.

Not a single second. Albeit I've seen highlights on the News.... I haven't watched in over a decade. I mean, I have no stake in the outcome. I think the celeb-culture is somewhat silly.
Plus the Academy is made up of 77 percent male membership. And, too, 94 percent of the Academy is white. So, it has a gender and racial bias.

Oscar voters overwhelmingly white, male:

How does a film as badly written as Django Unchained get an award for best screenplay? Like most of the posters from the UK I was asleep in bed while it all happened; we don't even get real highlights just a few snippets on the news. Wasn't there at one time a lifetime achievement award? There doesn't seem to have been one this year, it wasn't in the lists. Also, I understand that Michael Winner never made it to the obituary section.

Prospero
02-27-2013, 01:26 PM
Yes, curious omission of Michael Winner. Like his films or loathe them (and i am in the latter camp) he was, nevertheless, a player. Winner in death was, then a loser.

The ACADEMY AWARDS is like a train wreck, you can't help but watch to see how bad it will be. And the corny crap spewed by Seth McFarland as emcee was rank amateur.....even offensive for many. There was a Captain Kirk skit ( yes, the original William Shatner making a fool of himself) that dragged on and on....even the audience was clearly embarrassed. And for prime time televsion, does anyone really give two shits who wins best sound editing?

Stavros
02-27-2013, 11:34 PM
I havent seen any footage from it but I did read somewhere that the compere was an embarrassment. I understand your point, underdawg, on the other hand, there are films which are superbly well made, and its not just direction, so if there must be awards, recognising the guys (and gals) behind the camera must be worth something. One of the unwritten histories of Hollywood concerns the camera men and other technicians who laid the star-starlet-leading man-whoever: off-cue there is a lot of sex going on. Does anyone remember the scene from Billy Wilders elegaic film, Fedora?

Prospero
02-28-2013, 10:08 AM
There is a tension between serious recognition of the process of film making - with awards for sound people, cameramen, editors etc and the showbiz spectacle that is the Oscars ceremony and the BAFTAs here in the UK. The networks, big TV channels, want glitzy pabulum to maximise audience ratings and allow advertising income to soar so that is what the public gets. That is why it is pretty hard - by and large - to take these awards ceremonies too seriously. They are a mirror to the widest oublic taste rather than a serious set of awards for the best. Occasionally the best does win through (Daniel day Lewis did stand nearly head and shoulders over the rest - though Jennifer Lawrence's award was not, IMHO, deserved, cute though she is.)

Which channel are the public toilet attendant awards ceremony on? Live from the loos at Leicester Square?

For someone who lives in London, you seem blissfully unaware of the cottages that are, as it were, sprinkled around the city. There is a Gents Toilet at the end of Carnaby Street where it runs into Great Marlborough St and in that sort of 'no man's land' (no pun intended!) the action gets pretty furious between 5-6pm, which is a bind if you really do need to use the installation for its original purpose! The only other place I have seen as busy at that time of day is the Cottage outside the Taylorian Institute on St Giles -standing room only -in a manner of speaking! Or spanking...

When I first moved down to London as a callow laddie from Scotland, a more wordly gay colleague took me to the Salisbury in St Martin's Lane, a glorious Victorian pub and then as now very much a gay meeting and copping off place. Certainly the first time I ever saw guys necking each other - coming from Glasgow I was more used to the sound of broken glass and the sight of blood accompanying a convivial evening's drinking.

As we walked up to the bar, Ian announced to the entire crowd, "Hands off, ladies. He's straight, and if he ever decides to turn, I'm first!"

It wasn't exactly a comfortable evening after that introduction....
