Dog abandoned for being 'gay' saved from gas chamber

ABC reported a veterinary tech rescued the bulldog-mix after his owner put him in a kill shelter for supposedly being gay.

A dog set to be euthanized for being "gay" has gotten his day.

The dog was left in a rabies control shelter in Jackson, Tenn., "not bc he's mean or bc he tears things up, but because… His owner says he’s gay!" the Facebook group Jackson TN Euthanasia posted online Wednesday.

The group, which tries to find homes for dogs in kill shelters, wrote that the dog "hunched another male dog so his owner threw him away bc he refuses to have a 'gay' dog!"

The story caught fire online, sparking outrage and a blitz of calls to the shelter. Within hours, the supposedly gay dog had been saved by a veterinary tech named Stephanie Fryns, ABC reported.

Fryns told ABC saw saw the dog on an adoption site and planned to rescue him even before his tale picked up steam. She has named the bulldog-mix Elton.

GAY ANIMALS?

Homosexual behavior has been observed in animals before and often stirs up debate.

In 2009, The Telegraph reported on a study that claimed homosexual behavior in animals is widespread and "part of a necessary biological adaptation for the survival of the species."

The 2009 study found homosexual behavior in albatross females when there was a shortage of males, as well as in locusts and penguins.

The study suggested that homosexual behavior in animals may even have been shaped by natural selection.

:(The evil like this in my home state just mystifies me. I'm glad the poor dog was saved. The former owner needs to be confined to an asylum. He's the one with the serious problem, not the dog. Thinking like this is dangerous, because it's not too far removed from doing this to humans. This kind of evil must be fought at every step.

I'm no fan of people being cruel to animals for any reason. This incident is especially ignorant and infuriating. Too many dogs, cats, and other animals mistreated, overbred, and/or abandoned. I have a yard full of strays I feed every morning. Have managed to keep the peace between the domestic-types and wild animals by fattening them up and confusing them. Seems to work so far as the results have been positive even if not scientific.

Natina, this was a good thread. Something we can both get behind.
