i am really shocked that no one has posted this. (if i missed it, please delete the double post).

with all the brazilian girls we love and all the joy we get from watching them perform, when i first heard this story, not knowing the geography of brazil, i wondered if any of our favorite performers could have been involved.

The Rhode Island nightclub where Great White was using Pyrotechnics without a fire permit caught the cheap black acoustical foam on fire. Within 5 minutes the entire club was on fire. Exits were blocked off etc. No fire sprinklers either. MAIN CAUSES: Fireworks indoors, illegal flammable insulation (oil based foam), over capacity, poor lighting, blocked exits, poor exit layout. Wiki isn't always accurate but this one appears decent The Station nightclub fire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Station_nightclub_fire)

I believe similar problems occurred here. My heart goes out to all of the victims and their families and friends. Their loss didn't need to happen.

In the US, the RI fire changed most fire codes that all nightclubs new or old shall have fire sprinklers. Still many of the bigger clubs could have problems in an emergency. All HA members should be cognizant when in a business, store, club, or arena where the exits are.

You have to wonder why anyone would set off a firework in a confined space, if that is what happened. What is depressing is that even though major fires in discos are widely reported -there was one in Bangkok a few years ago- the main cause of death is always the same -fire exits that don't open or don't exist so that people can't get out and are either crushed to death in the stampede or die from smoke inhalation. Night club owners never seem to take note and improve their safety regime -many must be death traps. Nevertheless, the governor of Sao Paulo province has called for tighter inspections of these venues.

Hard to know about transexual performers, we assume they are based mostly in Rio or Sau Paulo; Santa Maria is a university town. Who knows?

I think the Kiss fire in Santa Maria with 234 dead stands as the third worst in history, after the all-time worst Coconut Grove fire in Boston in 1942 killing 492 and the Luoyang, China nightclub fire in December 2000, killing 309 people. The Coconut Grove fire was so horrible it led to numerous fire regulation reforms, including having exit doors open outwards.
