The Honey Boo Boo thread got me wondering about what the worst shows on TV are...

do you hate political shows that don't agree with your ideology?
do you hate "you are the father" maury episodes?
do you hate reality shows that show the underbelly of american society?
do you hate sesame street because furry things scare you?

what say you?

I watch mostly sitcoms since I don't have the patience to sit through one-hour dramas. That being said, the worst sitcoms are:

1) Two and a Half Men
2) Two Broke Girls
3) Whitney

In the case of non-fiction, its about the whole package -the production values, the writing, the acting -too many programmes on UK TV are made to a formula, short 2-3 minute scenes, saturated with anonymous muzak, with stereotypical characters who constantly repeat the words in dialogue -for example someone says 'are you going to the movies?' and the reply is 'the movies?' rather than yes, no, or maybe. Most programmes these days anyway are about cops or detectives or forensics -drunk cops, divorced cops, classical-music loving cops, jazz-loving cops, Danish cops, misogynist cops; cops in uniform, cops in jumpers, cops who wear ties, cops who don't wear ties; amateur cops, African cops.

I liked The Wire because I thought it was challenging and original, and because it is unusual to see characters develop over six series; I like Homeland because it tries to deal with serious issues, but it does have plot holes and is unlikely to survive increasingly unbelievable storylines.
There is a profound lack of imagination and creativity, it means I rarely watch tv these days.

Factual tv also suffers from the formula curse. If its history then park the historian in front of the usual global icons: Taj Mahal, Eiffel Tower, Brooklyn Bridge/Statue of Liberty, Kremlin, Colosseum, etc. Then give them something pompous to say to mark a commercial break: With this one decision, Henry, without realising it at the time, was changing the fate of the English monarchy, indeed of his Kingdom...It was here, on this piece of New England that history was made: neither the British Empire nor its American Colonies would ever be the same again...gasp!

Stick to the movies, much more reliable and much better entertainment.

The worst programmes on contemporary TV are reality programmes and celebrity led twaddle. House makeover shows and cookery programmes are just tedious. I hate soap operas too - and medical dramas. I agree with Stavros about the bulk of contemporary documentaries - all too often an once amusing comedian fronting a programme which offers little in the way of new information.

The TV I like best are factual programmes which do delve deeper, and well written contemporary drama. So The Wire, yes, The Sopranos Yes, Homeland yes, The Good Wife (a qualified yes), Madmen, The Newsroom (for its political stance otherwise rather hokey), Nurse jackie, Sherlock Holmes.... and good comedy. But what is funny is so subjective that anything I say I have found hugely funny is likely to simply irritate others. So - subjective choice... Fawlty Towers and, long ago, Monty Python. More recently Have i Got News For you, Outnumbered, London 2012 (a spoof about the planning of the 2012 Olympics). Classics - the Marx Brothers and the best of Woody Allen (long long go now sadly)

Are soap operas popular in the UK? They're getting easier and easier to avoid over here. They replaced them with cooking shows, home improvement, or The View ripoffs. Sometimes the cooking shows aren't too bad. I do like to eat.

Afternoon television will always be shit. Thank God for TIVO and DVR.

Yes - the longest running show on british TV is a hugely popular soap opera called Coronation Street - sent in a fictional working class street in Manchester. And we also have a radio soap that has been on since the 1950s - every evening monday thru friday - called The Archers which has an agricultural plotline. Just about every living brit has listened to it - by intent or accidentally - at some point. The Archers are a farming dynasty.

There are plenty of other long running soaps. Another is called Eastenders - about life centering around a working class pub in the East End of London.

Is there an exact definition of what a soap opera is? I've watched much episodic television over the years that had a soapy feeling to it even though it was action driven toward a male demo.

Do soaps usually need to be afternoon(sometimes prime-time too) melodramas that are geared toward women?

I could have mentioned all those programmes too but didn't, as for soap operas, even the longest established transexual character on tv, 18 years in Coronation Street (and leaving later this year) doesn't make that crap worth watching. Comedy is also beyond belief -I stumbled on something on BBC called Mrs Brown's Boys and couldn't believe it was possible in 2013. Apart from some moments in The Fast Show, Fawlty Towers was the last funny show on tv, but the Marx Bros? Dire.

Nope - soaps were originally called soaps because they were long running dramas, usually with a semi domestic setting - because they were originally radio dramas on the US sponsored by soap manufacturers such as Palmolive. In the US they do seem to be a daytime phenomenon - but in the Uk and many other parts of the world - they're on in the evenings. Coronation Street traditionally is at 7.30 in the evening on the UK's most watched network ITV. The Archers is scheduled on the radio every day at 7.00 pm for fifteen minutes. Eastenders is an evening show as have been many other soaps - Neighbours (imported from Australia - a show which launched the careers of "music" performers such as jason Donovan and Kylie Minogue) Grange hill - a school soap, Hollyoaks. There have been many more that I can't recall.

They can also become famous in terms of kitsch as the worst programmes ever made -once there was Crossroads, then El Dorado, but does anyone remember Triangle?

We had Dallas and Dynasty on prime-time. Falcon Crust or something too.

I deeply dislike reality shows - and that seems to be something of a consensus here. Yet for the wider public they are hugely popular with very high ratings.

I wonder if there are those who love them present on this board - yet not prepared to raise their head above the parapet for fear of ridicule? I'd love to hear what it is about these shows that makes you enjoy watching them?

I pretty much hate the so-called reality shows. Some have potential, but are ruined because the producers play to the lowest common denominator. Yeah, I know, that's where the money is.

There's one that really disappoints - Black Gold. I somehow doubt that the average roughneck is willing to take so much verbal abuse or that the industry can get away with so many blatant safety abuses.

I know what would be true treat. Take all the 'real' housewives and put them on an oil rig. Now that would be hilarious.

Some of the home improvement shows are informative.

first off, its really just another version of "hoarders" but as expected, this show is fake, but i didn't realize how much.

i figured that it was all just pre-arranged and they were just acting like they buy things they find in the layers of crap but nope...apparently the production staff plants most of the items.

The only 2 of the reality shows on history channel that are partly real are in fact american restoration and counting cars. The reason i say they are partly real is that the customer interaction and pricing is likely all fake, but someone does have to repair and repaint the stuff they actually do fix up (notwithstanding the coke machine incident with pawn stars) so someone is actually doing some real work on these machines and cars at some point in these shops.

Don't watch "Reality" Shows.... Plus they can't be Reality shows, as it were. Reality is 3 dimensional. TV is two -- :)
And people usually gravitate to "political shows" that align with their own political ideology.

I used to like American Restoration on the History Channel but rather than show how these items are restored we now have become scripted tension (I wanna wear a purple shirt - from that fucking nobody whatever his name is) and the stripper he married and that girly arm son of hers suddenly appearing as if either the whore or the jizz cake she shit out contribute anything. I imagine that slut telling him "Brettley should be on the show more" and suddenly my cable bill pays for Ricks blowjobs. No interest anymore.
