Arguing with someone on the internet is like playing chess with a Pigeon, no matter how good you are at chess, the pigeon is just going to knock over the pieces, crap on the board and strut around like its victorious.

It may not change who you are arguing with, but there are many more who may look and learn some logic from one, or the other. It becomes part of the public discourse on any particular subject. I think it's been good for me to hear others with more conservative views. It helps me to better understand what is important to me. And then you get others with your own viewpoint, who may bring a fresh approach, or supporting statistics.

I think some should argue on the internet as they are funny and entertaining.

Without conflict here we would not have funny quotes such as a salvage beating or wig on your football.

Although annoying, posters such as Darryl, Mimi, Honda and OMK made this joint interesting.

The aim is to provide a public exploration of an issue or a body of issues that benefits participants and lurkers alike. Of course the only one who ever benefits from an argument is the one who is listens well enough to learn where the argument succeeds and where it fails.

I agree with Trish.

But I'd also tend to suspect that very little of the heated argument on here - particularly in the run-up to the last US election or over guns post the Newtown slaughter - changes anybody's point of view. (No one discusses UK politics here because there are so few Brits who participate publicly and so few Americans who know anything about what happens in the UK) And interesting that no-one has started a thread on Mali. Hands up those who had any idea where it was before the recent french military action there.

I'm all for having discussions, debates, and polite disagreements but the six hour poo flinging is nonsense. A few folks log on primarily for that reason. The best course of action is to ignore someone so desperate for attention or approval.

I think there is a problem with people who enter forums like this one to preach -it means that 'debate' becomes a pointless argument because the motive of one is not to discuss an idea, an event, a person, but to convert someone to a point of view. As Trish and Prospero say, it is one thing to have a healthy debate about something, another to just hammer away at a single point without caring what the response is. One is creative, the other just arid, and boring too.

Agreed. I'm not a fan of preaching or shaming tactics. No soap boxes in a pornography forum.

It's only a waste of time if your objective is to try and change a person's *dumbass opinion about something! lol

If your objective is to wind them up a bit, or slam down someone who is acting like a tool, or perhaps (in special circumstances) arguing for the silent masses eating their popcorn... Then it can be worth it!

(I still voted true)
