The truth of course is that the people willing to admit they are homosexual now is so much higher than even say 10 years ago. Most people honestly dont give a sh%^ about someone elses sex life. Ellen came out and it was a big deal and the right wingers bleated - now she's a beloved TV icon and the average Republican could care less if she's sleeping with Portia. Times change and nowadays admitting your gay just isn't the terrible thing it once was.

I tend to agree with alpha that what is actually happening is that fewer people are feeling compelled to be darkly closeted or even using a semi-transparent vail of "life long bachelorhood". The reasons IMHO are more about changing demographics rather than a sweeping changing in attitudes.

While there has been real fear and misunderstanding in my lifetime of people without the accepted mainstream sexuality (it was a by-product of ignorance rather than knowledgable disdain). These people are getting to be older now and therefore a smaller portion of the populace.

The whole issue seemed to take on larger political dimensions as it provided an ideal wedge issue in the 70's and beyond, when the Republican Party was looking for issues to cement their ownership of the Christian Right.

That (Christian Right) group was instrumental in forging the once firmly New Deal southern democrats into a key cog in the Republican Party and the wedge issues of guns, gay rights, gay marriage, affirmative action and equal rights in general played well into the fears and anger of many people who saw their world changing on this social issues and to some extent to this day distracts them from their shrinking net worth while the stay bitterly at a whole bundle of wedge issues in which sexual orientation is a powerful feature, though it is joined by gun rights and a set of other "fears".

It certainly was a handy tool for Republican who basic mission is to return economic distribution back to favor the 1% versus the 99% to the pre-Great Depression model that did so.

The tactic worked like a charm in electoral politics for more than three decades. But the make up of America is changing and "old fearful white men" are becoming just another group in American culture as younger people are less likely to be driven by the same wedge issues including those of social surpression based on sexual orientation.

Sadly this is not to say that these hateful views still do not exist but number of people who hold them are diminishing, the number of those people who don't care about the issues, or deeply feel these are civil rights issues is growing has increased.

And that atmosphere of changing demographics has some trickle down affect on the older folks, makes them a smaller part of society and have created an environment where more people do not feel they have to hide their sexual orientation.

So to that extent when alpha says "the average Republican could care less" it should IMHO noted with a caveat that many GOPers never did care and just used as a wedge to distract from other issues in which they would not fair well. And for many they still are homophobic but as a percentage of the population they are diminishing as they age and America becomes a more rainbow oriented population.

Whatever the reasons, IMHO the change is good and most welcome, but I fear the current SCOTUS in a series of 5-4 rulings may make the backwards and out dated prejudice a form of discriminative judicial law just as Dread - Scott did in the 19th Century because the court is packed with folks who cling to the prejudices of the the last quarter of the last century.

Relax people, - in Russian Federation since 1991 they govern the Russian state, the federal services, the special forces, the army, the mass-media, the culture, the education, the churches (even for muslims), etc. Within the Soviet Era the homosexuels were governed by soviet repressive system that used the cruel public intolerance to these people as the best mode to easily control theirs actions as of the members of the state power and of soviet society. So, they were widely adopted for different institutions as fully dependent specialists and leaders, controled by KGB and MIA. Now the USSR is a part of the world history. But the homosexuels, etc. previously controled by soviet system, kept theirs places in Russia after the events of 1991. And now they govern the whole country. So, the modern Russian Federation is the sample of the future of any country governed of dominated by them. Say different, the thing that you are speaking about above is just the beginning for western countries, - the passed that was passed by USSR state power system many years ago and the current state of modern Russia.
