The great Indian musician Ravi Shanker has died at the age of 92.

Most people probably came to know Shankar via his collaboration with Beatle George Harrison.

But he'd already done some fine collaborations with the violinist Yehudi Menuhin. The two musicians met in India in the 1950s.

Ravi & Anoushka Shankar - Raga Anandi Kalyan - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-KXk_8_8oLY)

Ravi had two daughters - both now musicians - Norah jones and Anoushka Shanker (who also plays the Sitar).

I once saw Shanker give a long concert at King' College Chapel in Cambridge. A magical evening.

RIP Ravi.

Never saw him live, but I often set my alarm to wake up to the opening strains of East Meets West.

Don't you mean that Ravi had two daughters, not Yehudi?

You could lose yourself in one of his ragas, just as he often did.

Great loss, but a good, long life.

Glorious reincarnation, Ravi. He was quite talented in his own right, but George was my favorite Beatle and I <3 <3 <3 Norah.

The set he did at the Monterey Festival in 1967 was phenomenal and my introduction to his music, I assume it is still available on cd. It is a pity that he became associated with George Harrison, he was by comparison a musician in a different class, but also a very humble man and I believe he was grateful too GH for the exposure and support.
