Please let's everybody take a moment to remember all those that we have lost, and another moment to be thankful for those we still have. Please share this in hope of stopping Hate crimes, Bullying, ignorance, and hope this will help educate and open the doors to help that is needed.

I agree - great post. And very sorry that on this day of days when we should be honouring the memory of transsexual girls - and boys - who have died as the result of hate and ignorance, that so few members of HA have bothered to pay their respects.

Shame.

I agree with you, Robert Louis, and I'm also kind of surprised. It's almost weird...

There’s controversy over the raw numbers, but one way or the other, the violence transgenders are the victims of is tremendously higher than that suffered by any other members of society. The number circulating (but difficult to verifiy) is 1 in 12 transgender person is likely to be murdered (1 in 8 if you’re a “coloured” t-woman), as opposed to 1 in 18 000 in the general population…
Here are a few articles (and extracts) relating to the subject:

Are Transgender People Over a Thousand Times More Likely to be Murdered than Cisgender?

by Daran.
Update November 2012: A very interesting post and discussion on this topic can be found here.
Lisa from Questioning Transphobia:
…trans people cannot even talk about the fact that we have a 1 in 12 chance of being murdered, at least in America – the victims predominantly women of color. The average person has a 1 in 18,000 chance of being murdered.
Lisa does not give any source for the proposition that the victims are “prdominantly women of color”1. The link she does provides is to the Human Rights Campaign:
…one expert estimates that transgender individuals living in America today have a one in 12 chance of being murdered. [1] In contrast, the average person has about a one in 18,000 chance of being murdered. [2]

Murder statistics of transgender people
May 29, 2012
I’ve been thinking a lot about trans issues a lot in the past few days, and have especially been considering the disturbing statistics associated with the violence and oppression transgender people face. The statistic that disturbs me the most, which I have now seen on many other websites, was first presented in the comments section of this post on the phrase “Die Cis Scum” (emphasis mine):
« The difference is VIOLENCE.
Go look up how much risk there is for atheists being murdered by Christians. Now how about that one in twelve risk for trans women being murdered by cis people. Or one in eight if you happen to be a trans woman of colour.”
My first reaction to this statistic was along the lines of, “ONE (1) IN TWELVE (12)?! Holy FSM, this is fucking horrifying! Trans people have every reason to be freaked out by cis people, not just because of the oppression and discrimination, which is bad enough, but especially if cis people are murdering trans people at this rate. Trans people have every reason to be freaked out if cis people are murdering trans people at all, especially if those murders are based on hatred toward trans people, especially if trans people are targeted for being trans. This has to stop!”

Thanks Dan. I believe in Brazil it's even worse, where the macho culture is so paranoid about the attraction that tgirls have for men, and there is also plenty of evidence that the police are actively involved in the murders of transwomen. Very sad.

Great post. Until I started to date a transwoman I did not know how much they have to go through in society. The transgirl that I am dating is very much like the gg that I have dated in the past. She bitches about the same thing love shopping and girl shows and hate sports.

Thanks Amber, appreciated. Have a look at the new thread I just posted in the review section - there is some good news on this sad day.

My thoughts are with all transgendered people who have had to suffer because of the ignorance and prejudices of others, and my sympathies to everyone who has lost a loved one to the same. I know people can be very cruel. I have a friend who began her transition while she was in high school, and the torment was so bad that she dropped out after her sophomore year. Luckily she is a smart, strong person with a very supportive family, and has done very well for herself. She is 11 years post-op and has earned a Doctoral degree. Such is not the case for many trans people, though, and they all need our support.

As one who knows of girls who have been taken away from us, I'm observing this day as well.

Just because I watch porn doesn't mean I don't care about the girl's well-being...

Thanks Yogi for starting the post. The hate, ignorance and violence need to stop. Anyone who commits a crime against another human being needs to have consequences. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family members and friends who have lost loved ones because of anothers inability for acceptance.
