Michigan $1 Million Lotto Winner Who Was Charged With Welfare Fraud Found Dead

By SUSANNA KIM and ALYSSA NEWCOMB | Good Morning America – 22 hrs ago

A woman who admitted to receiving food stamps (http://abcnews.go.com/Business/michigan-million-lotto-winner-arrested-welfare-fraud/story?id=16155230#.UGd5b5jA-kZ) after winning $1 million on a Michigan state lotto game show was found dead today.
The circumstances surrounding Amanda Clayton's death were not immediately released by police, but ABC News' Detroit affiliate WXYZ-TV (http://www.wxyz.com/dpp/news/region/wayne_county/lottery-winner-who-was-charged-with-welfare-fraud-found-dead) reported that sources within the police department said they suspect the woman died of an overdose.
An autopsy is pending on Clayton's body, which was found at a home in Ecorse, Mich., police said.
Clayton, who became a millionaire after her big win last September, caused outrage earlier this year when it was revealed she was continuing to get $200 in monthly food aid from the state.
According to the attorney general's office, Clayton failed to report her winnings and employment while receiving $5,475 in food and medical assistance.
"It's simply common sense that million dollar lottery winners forfeit their right to public assistance," Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette said in a statement. "We will continue to work with local, state and federal authorities to uphold state laws intended to ensure wise stewardship of taxpayer dollars."
Michigan public assistance programs require participants to report income and employment.
She pleaded no contest to welfare fraud and was sentenced to probation in July.

I despise people who do stuff like that. They just give a bad name and a bad rep to anyone who benefits from help. And a crushing majority who does really is in need of some help. But it just gives ammunition to anyone that dislikes the State’s involvement in civil society.
This being said, this woman must have been nuts! We’re not talking about a little work under the radar, but about a million dollars… She might have been very dishonest of course, but it also might be something else. Some people have it so hard, sometimes, during their life, that they can’t help trying to scrape off a bit here and there for ever after. It becomes a fear, for them, a phobia, no matter how much they eventually have in the bank. Like for any neurosis, it’s so difficult to get rid of something like that precisely because it has helped you live for so long.
I don’t know what the case was for that woman. Death is the ultimate reality check. She ended it with an overdose; I just hope for her this one was paradise…

She got everything she ever wanted, lots of money, lots of drugs and a quick and permanent end to all her troubles. I actually know quite a few people that are better off not being wealthy for the same reason. Lack of self control, any addiction and money are a shitty combination
