I've coped without the others, I'll manage without the latest too. If you want to see a truly great contemporary vampire film, get the original Swedish take on Let the Right One In

Agreed. Also the Werner Herzog remake of Nosferatu. That'll give you the creeps.

We've agreed on the Herzog before, Dino. The most genuinely terrifying vampire I can think of was Barlow in the original TV version of Salem's Lot, because absolutely nothing worked against him.

That too. Like that they made him look rat-like in Salem's Lot too. First watched it as a kid on TV in the 1970s. I'd catch it every year until it came to VHS then DVD. The TV Version is the way to go.

Reggie Nadler(The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, Mark of the Devil) played Barlow. Thought he was in Witchfinder General too but I guess he wasn't. Get that and Mark of the Devil mixed up. A face that makes children cry even before make-up.

Agreed. Any movie involving Nicholas Cage and the supernatural should be given a very wide berth. Salem's Lot is terrible, but the remake of the Wicker Man should have seen someone go to jail. Unspeakably bad.

I wish to personally express my gratitude for giving me an excuse to post this gif.

Still remember Nicolas Cage on Leno's couch telling us in TV Land just how scary The Wicker Man was. Bullshit!

One movie that has been largely ignored is 1988 “Vampire’s Kiss”, by Robert Bierman, with Nicolas Cage and Jennifer Beals. It’s been terribly advertised as a comedy which it isn’t by any stretch of the imagination, but I guess they couldn’t figure out what to make of this one. It’s a regular guy who’s bitten by a regular girl on a regular one night stand, who gradually falls into schizophrenic delusion, thinking she was a vampire. It’s a total nightmare but presents a pretty realistic account of the development of the psychosis. That one scared me much more than any other vampire film.

Maria Conchita Alonzo is in that. She was great as the Taco Girl In Jail Cell/Homegirl in Colors.

Have you seen the original Brit movie from 1973? It was mostly filmed in Dumfries and Galloway on the Solway coast. My cousin is an extra in the maypole scene! That film is one of those magical occasions when all the parts come together to make something that transcends even the maker's fondest dreams.

My dad took me as a small child to see it. I was too young and waiting for Christopher Lee to turn into Dracula. Years later I grew to appreciate and really enjoy the film. Have the Wooden Coffin Box Set with Theatrical and Extended versions. Think I'll watch it again soon. Beautifully filmed. Amazing location.

Different film but I had the same experience at the same theater but years later became a fan of the Australian Peter Weir film The Last Wave with Richard Chamberlin.

I love The Last Wave - little known and vastly underrated. Weir is a real original in cinema. Watch Picnic at Hanging Rock if you haven't seen it and I know you'll like The Cars that Ate Paris, all made before the inevitable move to Hollywood. Then add Witness, The Truman Show etc and you have someone who deserves every accolade.

Is The Last Wave as good as the trailer promises it to be? Wow!

Picnic at Hanging Rock was a beautiful film, so well shot and poetical. Not much of a story line, but you just don’t care. Young women as beautiful as Botticelli’s angels, lost in magnificent settings…

And the fantastic sense of heat too. Incredibly erotic without even a hint of nudity, a wonderful setting of the adagio from The Emperor. And Rachel Roberts going potty, what's not to like?

Yes. The type of magnificent, slow pace movie they just don’t make anymore, for very obvious financial and commercial reasons. I agree it’s really worth watching. I’ve seen it only once, a good while back, but I remember it quite well.

Picnic at Hanging Rock is another good Peter Weir film. I haven't thought about these films in some time.
