Transsexual pregnancy, like male pregnancy, has been limited to the realms of speculation, science fiction and comedy as the phenomenon would be a biological impossibility under traditional circumstances. Due to advances in modern medicine the concept is generally considered possible, but both the risks and the chances of success are still at foolhardy levels.

Male-to-Female transsexuals, like men, lack a womb, so for a transsexual pregnancy to occur, alternative measures have to be made. Ectopic pregnancy is a given, and fertilization would be done in vitro by implantation into the abdominal cavity. Since most male-to-female (MtF) transsexuals take various form of estrogen to induce female secondary sex characteristics, the hormonal balance in the transsexuals body would be adequate for carriying and nurturing a fetus. Several advances in stem cell technology have made it possible for male mammals to produce eggs. Scientists have found a way to mass produce eggs from embryos, even male embryos. Reported in the journal Science, the work shows that, even outside the body, embryonic stem cells remain "totipotent," that is capable of generating any of the body's tissues, according to Prof Hans Scholer[1]. Being that males (and MtF transsexuals) have one X chromosome, the sex chromosome possessed by women, they can make eggs. The resulting children from the male/transsexual female couple would be the biological children of the couple.

TV's a shitty vessel for information. This kind of research has actually been going on since the late 1970's with cloning, and since 2000 with male eggs. Information is disseminated more speedily through the Internet(medical PDF's, Wikipedia), so that's what I rely on. Just look up stem cell on wired.com or the online version of the british newspaper the guardian (http://www.guaridian.co.uk).

GWB & co. are only against federally funded stem cell research that aborts embryos. Private and state research is still legal, and in fact California passed a proposition creating a US$3 billion state taxpayer-funded institute for stem cell research. Europe and Asia are way ahead of the US in regards to the technology anyways. In countries like the UK it is still legal to fund stem cell research with federal funds.


There's also new stem cell harvesting procedure that were developed in 2005 that does not involve the destruction of embryos.

The good doctor keeps up to date on all medical happenings, and pointed me in the direction of the journal Reproductive Fertility Developments. Its seems as if Hans Scholer is blowing his own trumpet rather a bit. Those clever people on the internet have even put a summary on their website:

Lord Goatse should add that all of Scholer's work has been on embryonic stem cells. The use of these makes President George W Bush cry, so I don't believe this kind of work will take off in America, for a while.

Like I said before, stem cell research is still legal on the state leval and in the private sector in the US. And don't forget, the first cross-sex hormone experiments took place in Germany in the 1930's. That research was destoyed by the Nazi's during Hitler's reign and WWII.

Ectopic pregnancy is very dangerous - the generally accepted thought in the medical community is that they're so dangerous, they need to be stopped as soon as they are detected. An intentional ectopic pregnancy, which is what this would be, isn't really a very practical idea.

Although it's possible that one could produce a child this way, it's most likeky to just lead to the death of the mother and child as well.
