Russian underground sect: residents 'shocked' by catacombs

The Telegraph's Moscow correspondent, Tom Parfitt, describes the feelings of the community in Kazan after 70 people from a conservative muslim sect were found living in 'catacomb' like conditions.

7:51PM BST 09 Aug 2012

The discovery of an Islamic sect in Russia, where 70 people including 27 children were discovered living in a catacomb, has led prosecutors to open a child abuse investigation. Some of the children, including babies aged one, are said to have spent their entire lives underground and never seen daylight. At least 19 of the children were taken into care by social services and some of them sent to hospital after the raid last Friday. Villagers where the discovery took place expressed shock saying, "their children don't go to school, they have no education, no medical checks". The subterranean sect was discovered by police and security forces in the village of Torfyanoy near Kazan in the republic of Tatarstan, the biggest majority-Muslim region in Russia (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/russia/), 500 miles east of Moscow.

Officers were carrying out a routine check of conservative Islamic groups after a twin attack last month in which the moderate Mufti of the republic was injured in a car bomb and his deputy was shot dead.
A strict community led by Fayzrakhman Sattarov, 83, a self-claimed "emissary of Allah", had been known to be living at the property for up to a decade, but there had apparently been no reason to suspect wrongdoing.
Kazan is located 497 miles east of Moscow in Tatarstan, a majority Muslim internal Russian republic.

Weird. Not much talk about the reasons these people were living like that. Dooms day sect? Don’t think so; there’s not that much of that in Islam. Political reasons? Fear? These people might have been coming from somewhere else: the elderly lady didn’t seem to know them; maybe they came from some war zone…
It’s almost as fishy for the reporters (or the Russian authorities) not to give more infos as it is strange for those people to live like that…
You always think you’ve heard everything. Where was that report from Turkey, I think, where they found a whole family in a remote region who were most of the time walking on all four? I think it was on PBS Nova, a couple of years ago…

Just saw it on Al-Jazeera and wanted to post this unusual story.
