Chloe Sevigny is to play a transsexual in a new TV drama written by the writer to done Shameless, State of Play etc.
She's to play a transsexual within a show called "Mia" which is based on the life of Philadelphia transsexual Monica Foxx. This will be airing on HBO later this year.

It would be difficult, but I don't think totally impossible to scout a TG with acting potential and 'coach' her up.

I'd be inclined to agree with you if it were not Chloe. IMO, she's very capable of doing a great job in the role. Of course, my opinion counts for little since I am not a transsexual, just a guy who loves them.. But having seen Chloe in several films and having followed her career, I think she is excellent in roles other actresses fail in.

There have been a few roles about transexuals played by transexuals
But not enough. Breakfast on Pluto and Transamerica - both came out the same year i think - and one used a straight man as a TV, the other a woman as a transexual.

Right Liberty, but it's TV. Have you see the film "Boys Don't Cry"? Chloe was the co-star, with Hilary Swank. It's a film about a genetic girl, transgendered as a boy. It's a tragic story, unfortunately and as I recall it's based on a real happening. Chloe plays a female but does a great job in an unusual role.

There have been some fine portrayals of TS women by GG women, most especially Felicity Huffman as Bree in Transamerica and also years ago Lisa Edelstein on Allie McBeal. But best yet has been a prominent television TS role by an actual TS actress, Candis Cayne on Dirty Sexy Money.

Too bad there aren't more films like this.

If directors/producers really want transgendered actresses to be in these roles, they should put out casting calls for the physical type they're looking for and work with these girls until they're credible on film.

I've seen too many flicks with ex-fashion models who we as movie viewers were supposed to pretend could ACT. It's just being lazy IMO.

part of acting requires playing a part of something you are not and excelling. kinda like not having to hire a real godfather to play the part of the godfather. i'm guessing they were thinking something along the same lines in this case.
