Apparently that's what Sean Harris, a pastor from North Carolina thinks.

http://www.advocate.com/sites/advocate.com/files/imagecache/stories/SEANHARRIS%20X400%20ADVOCATE.COM_.jpg

Sean Harris (pictured, left), the senior pastor at Berean Baptist Church in Fayetteville, is a strong supporter of North Carolina's proposed antigay Amendment One. In Sunday's sermon, Harris screams like a maniac about cracking limp wrists and punching young children who exhibit gender-variant behavior. Girls playing sports are OK, but they must attempt to look pretty, according to Harris.

I don't understand how this doesn't qualify as hate speech.

The reason why fighting words are categorically excluded from the protection of the First Amendment is not that their content communicates any particular idea, but that their content embodies a particularly intolerable (and socially unnecessary) mode of expressing whatever idea the speaker wishes to convey. Even in cases where speech encourages illegal violence, instances of incitement qualify as criminal only if the threat of violence is imminent.

This is a pastor telling his congregation that child abuse is not only allowable, but condonable so long as your child exhibits gender dis-associative or gay behavior. I'd like to think that the parents in the congregation are intelligent enough to ignore Harris' off-color commentary, but the audio recordings tell a completely different story.

MP3 recording of Sean Harris preaching a message of violence against gay and gender dysphoric children (http://www.goodasyou.org/marriagesundayharris3.mp3).

What do you think? Does his message qualify as hate speech, or should his opinion be protected by our constitution's first amendment rights to free speech and freedom of religion?

It never works. I got it plenty as a kid, too. I was an only child and neither of my parents knew how to be parents. They expected perfection and any time I'd deviate from it, I got my ass beat or got locked in the basement. That worked until I turned 14 and tried to burn the house down with both of them in it.

Violence always translates to disrespect and retaliation. It doesn't keep kids in line; it just teaches them how to lie and hide.

Those poor effeminate kids need special attention & private prayer sessions. "On your knees suplicant, & allow the messenger of the lord to show you the evils of gaydom!"

So whatcha think? Is he top or bottom? (Don't say "versatile" because I don't think this guy's capable of multitasking.)

It's effeminate boys that are plaguing him, so it's difficult to say. But I suppose he's a top, if you want to call it that.

Maybe he's even here on HA. Let's see if we can determine whether or not Pastor Harris ever gives a sermon at the same exact time that mildcigar makes a post. You never know who's on this forum.

I have a hunch Pastor Harris has been secretly flying out to NYC on church money and getting fucked up the ass so often you could park a bus in his colon.

I mean look at the guys expression, you dont get your face frozen in that expression unless you have been doing some serious grunting on big dick.

We're getting away from the point guys. Everyone is piling in with their own variation on the possibility that Harris is a closet gay himself.

Whatever.

But once again it comes down to whether the US should consider that there might be reasonable limits on free speech. If he'd applied his comments to race, would he still have got away with it?

And yet again, an avowed "Christian" spews forth a message of hatred and violence, absolutely contrary to the principles of the faith he's supposed to preach. God (the irony is deliberate) help Jesus Christ if he came back to work in his own church in the American south.

If he was a Muslim cleric, you can bet that certain parties hereabouts would have been saying, there you go, all Muslims are the same.

It's outrageous.

If Jesus showed up our government would have him in jail by next week...

There is nothing wrong with Faith but "Religion" seems to always get the wrong message as in this case.

Note to Robertlouis:

Limiting freedom of speech is a slippery slope but in this case when preaching violence I would say its justified

Thanks Tempest. In the UK we have made legal moves to limit hate and other inflammatory speech where it is designed to promote racial hatred and potential violence. It extends not only to public speeches, pamphlets etc, but also to posts on social media sites. It is as you say a slippery slope, but on balance it's better to have it, otherwise if one gay kid is hurt or worse by someone who's listened to Harris, he can carry on with apparent impunity.

I disagree...if that were the case no one would ever know, outside of his cult, that this is what the asshole preaches. The laundry is out in the open. His bleating sheep will follow his advice regardless whether the public knows about it or not.

I don't disagree. But what happens if those who follow him take his advice and start beating up gay children? Are they responsible on their own or should he be prosecuted as well?

I believe the "Limiting" of hate speech that incites violence wasnt in reference to keeping it from the public eye but holding those who promote it legally punishable regardless of where it appears.

Im personally glad that social media sites have made this type of thing very hard to keep under wraps. In the days of strictly print media it was possible for something like this to go undiscovered by much of the public because there simply was no way of getting the word out... now one person with a cell phone can post a youtube clip or twitter post and it gets spread to millions within hours.

Hate is a dirty secret that we will no longer allow those responsible to keep hidden.

They are probably already taking his advice...not because he gives it....that's probably just a rationalization for it.

The video was uploaded by his "bleating sheep", so somebody in his congregation must be intelligent enough to know his message was outrageously off-color. This wouldn't be a story if Harris had kept this conversation private, but preaching it in front of a packed church isn't keeping the message private and that's where he done fucked up.

I really don't like to assume that church patrons are a bunch of dim-witted sheeple that blindly follow any message a pastor or priest happen to spoon feed them. Faith isn't synonymous with a lack of intelligence. Sometimes it'd seem that way, especially to atheists like me; but it's not reality... it's an intellectual cop-out.

Spanking a kid because he/she shows gay or effeminate tendencies. Exactly the same. It's the inference that it's wrong.
What this does is gives every schoolyard bully the right to "punch" a kid for "dropping his hand" or acting effeminate.

Its a valid question, although I don't think you can "punch" the white out of someone. But speech against race happens here every day. Ever hear of Louis Farrakhon? The KKK?

How about speech against classes? OWS anyone? The anti-gay marriage crowd? (know thats not a class struggle)

You get into race, you had better choose your words carefully, Farrakhon gets a wide birth. Lot of hate in that man. But free is free.. he has a right to express his ideals.

im guessing the pastor has had many same sex urges, if not, is subconsciously gay...

and hitting/spanking a kid is just bad parenting. not only is it wrong, but its a stupid and easy way to enforce a position onto another, which also leads to negative consequences.
