Not very peaceful. Remember watching Sid & Nancy and wanting that picture of Gary Oldman saluting the camera on the staircase. Why doesn't Ringo Starr start doing this instead?

The forward facing 'V' sign is actually an insult dating back to the 1200's, England was at war with France at the time (unsuprising as we'd pinched about a third of their country). The french had an advantage in mounted knights whereasthe English army had a devastating superiority in longbowmen, so whenever the french captured any archers they would cut the two bowstringing fingers (the 'V' symbol fingers) off to stop him firing arrows again. Before any big battle started it became the norm for the archers to stick two fingers up to the french to show them they were ready for battle and about to deliver the good news in the form of massive arrow volleys. The peace symbol originated much later in WWII and is normally given the other way round, but some historical figures like Churchill did it the other way (probably because he didn't give a fuck what anyone else thought). Little bit of trivia for the day.

Apparently that story about the archers is a bit if a myth. QI is usually right...

Yea its an "urban legend" first historical proof of it being used is late 1800 or early 1900 i think ?

Yeah, the good old internet is right thesis eh! I read that link and it just strikes me as a couple of bored fuckwits trying to prove/disprove something so they sound clever. When I was in Germany attached to an Artillery Regiment (the forebears of bow's & arrows), I remember reading one of the books in the sergeants mess which had all the battles etc in it, and that's where I read it. Who's right? Well not for me to say, but half of these battlefield detectives are only basing their shite on theories that they came up with, unless you were there a few hundred years ago your not gonna know what actually happened, I remember watching battlefield detectives & they said that the archers didn't do fuck all at Agincourt, now maybe I'm wrong but the only way to know exactly how effective a longbow is, is to put a suit of armour on & get 10 of your mates to shoot arrows at you, then you are in a position to comment on it. personally I prefer my version than a couple of boffins chatting shite between themselves. OK rant over.

Obviously I prefer 'your' version too - its a cool little story. But QI is a tv quiz show in England where they debunk popular myths and misconceptions, and I'd be very surprised if the researchers on that show were wrong.

The 'V' sign can be positive and negative: in Leonardo's Virgin of the Rocks, Jesus, sitting next to the Angel, grants John (sitting with the Virgin) his benediction using two fingers: this symbol of the benediction is common in religious painting dating back to the Middle Ages, if not before. There is an argument that the V sign was inverted as the opposite of benediction, ie a curse of the devil, and in this form was taken over by devil-worshippers, and is also identified as an important signal for non/anti-Chrisitians druids, Freemasons (Churchill was both a Druid and a Freemason), the Illuminati, and any other wacko cult you can think of.

As a sign of peace, it is closest to the benediction: two fingers raised with the palm facing the receiver; as an insult, a sign of the devil: two fingers raised, often in an upward motion with the palm facing the giver.

With regard to the issue of Agincourt and the Archers, Anne Curry at Southampton University, whose research on Agincourt is superior to most, has established how many armed men were arraigned on each side, and proves that the English Archers were the key to the English victory:

‘The real contrast between the armies,’ she argues, ‘was their composition rather than their size.’ Of the 12,000 French, around 75 per cent were men-at-arms. The corresponding proportion for the English was 20 per cent, with the rest archers. Their superiority in terms of men-at-arms, all fighting on foot with swords, lances and maces, gave confidence to the French and led to them placing more troops in the vanguard in anticipation of winning the day with a huge first clash against the weaker English force. But they underestimated the effectiveness of the huge numbers of English archers. At over 7,000, and defended by both stakes and the geography of the battlefield, they proved inaccessible by cavalry charge.
The French vanguard had no choice but to advance into a constant barrage of arrow fire, akin to modern machine-gun fire. Those who managed to reach the English men-at-arms were too tightly packed to raise their weapons to fight. Most were killed or injured in the melee, many by a swift dagger to the neck. Their fate persuaded their colleagues in the remaining French lines that entering the fray could be suicidal. As a result Agincourt was marked by accusations of cowardice and treason."

The full article, which at two pages is probably too much for HA readers, can, nevertheless, be read here:

Yeah, as long as it's on TV it must be right, I too would be in awe if any TV programme ever skewed the facts to up the ratings and attract more people who are easily influenced, just saying lol.

lol. Well what you're saying is fucking stupid. Have you seen Qi? You can make a documentary with the leading specialists in any given field, and the fact it is shown on tv does not undermine the subject or accuracy of their evidence.

What is your evidence? The fact you were attached to an artillery regiment, then read a book? You know I'd be in awe if an author of a book ever skewed the facts. (just saying)

My dad told me about that myth as a kid, and it's a cool story. Does that make it true? No. You don't know for a fact what the origin of the gesture is - so your absurd hostility towards me and crazy defensive stance on something so unimportant does raise a few questions...

Something so secret, wow this guy is even too stupid to google combat MOS. MOS means "Military Occupational Specialty", a gunner would be considered a combat MOS because the position he has is listed as combat oriented. How stupid are you? You're probably shitting bricks because if you met real men and not the ones you target for bullying, they would rip you a new asshole...if you're boyfriend hasn't already done it for you.

Um yeah, you've never been in the military. Bullying to get stuff done, are the armed forces in the UK that much different? I'm pretty sure most people in the military hate people like you, you make the work that much more difficult, you can't work in a team, and you're walking around trying to be macho when you don't realize the pistol in my hand makes us equal. What was your highest obtained rank in the military?

What is it that you two are arguing about? The historian Anne Curry has explained the military significance of the archers at Agincourt, isn't that enough to put this to bed; or come up with another theory on the V sign?
