Transsexual Candidate at Miss Universe Canada

Miss Universe Canada has officially accepted Jenna Talackova, a transsexual, as a contestant in the upcoming finals in May 19. Jenna has already represented Canada at Miss International Queen, a beauty pageant for transsexuals. The fact that she was accepted as a contestant raised several ethical and moral issues but for some it is a sign of equality. Canada is one of the progressive nations on earth with a very liberal application of its Equality Law as enshrined in its 1982 constitution.

But many pageant fans are not happy with this. They see it as an affront to the establishment since contests like the Big4 (Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss International and Miss Earth) are meant for naturally born women. While we've seen lesbians competing at the state level as in the case of Miss California USA 2012, the current issue is far more controversial because this is about a person born as a man and converted himself into a woman.

Still, many see this as a sign of equality and of freedom. After all, Jenna is legally a woman. Supporters say this is about someone who pursue his or her dream and should not be discriminated against.

What is your opinion about this? Is this a publicity stunt? An issue of equality and freedom? Or a transgression to the sanctity of beauty pageant institutions?

I think this is a big step in equality in Canada and many countries should follow. Good for her and for Canadians in pro of equality.

Is she really Canadian?

Isn't she a Thai shemale living in Canada?

I think this is a great thing, and shows a lot of courage on her part.

Honestly, I think the article using a photo where she was in a drag competition with makeup no woman would wear is in poor taste, since it's an intentional denial of her recognition given here.

Here are ones where she looks like the woman she is.

An A+ for Canada for being the leader in the world here!

Shes amazing! I really hope Canada let her compete and lead the way for others to follow, but unsure what happened as i cant see her among the current 2012 finalists http://www.beautiesofcanada.com/muc/contestants/2012-finals/ (as i was hoping to show some support and vote for her).

People are so inconsiderate. Just because a person causes a questioning of the status quo their dreams are less valid? It took decades for any progress to be made toward equality for women in North America, it took decades for any progress to be made toward equality for minorities in North America, and now we're dealing with the issue of human sexuality. I guess people don't care that those looking to oppress others based on old prejudices always end up the villain in the long run.

This has nothing to do with Canada.

The pagent is owned by Donald Trump.

He and his organizers are the ones who made the decision to remove her.

Is this a publicity stunt? Quite possibly. Would not put it past the Donald. If anything she gets her 15 minutes of fame. But overall, a good thing for Transgender awareness and rights and equality.

^ Wouldn't put it past a long time self-publicist and savvy media operator like him.

And Jenna does look quite like Ivanka Trump . You do wonder what's going on behind the scenes.....

Her 15 minutes has passed!

She'd made her point.

IMO she should have rejected her pageant place....maybe attempted to get a more long-lasting career in entertainment or media.
