FYI:
Tanning is frowned upon here in Thailand due to cultural differences and racism.

2 classes here in Thailand....The light skinned wealthy Chinese/Thai

and

The peasant farmers usually from the north...poor and typically tan from outdoor labor.

The peasant farmers from the north all labor daily in the fields and their skin color shows it,very,very dark.Many folks here will wear head to toe(including a mask)clothes in 100 degree weather just to avoid the tan.

Although many girls come from the north,they all avoid the sun to keep from being typecast,preferring to look "white and rich"

Very interesting, DJ_Asia. And not that different from the European experience, until the 20th century: the lower classes were tanned from working in the fields, and only the upper classes had the wealth and leisure time to avoid the sun, so it was desirable to be pale. Once the automation took over much of the labor, however, the tide turned and it became the leisure class who could afford to sunbathe. Thailand is reflecting the same trend, just in a different century.

Hate to break it to you Barclee but it is racism,pure and simple.the Thai/Chinese here in Thailand wont intermix or date the Isaans from the north,or the Hilltribe people...hell they dont even look at Farangs(Westerners)

they stick to their own and view others here with utter disdain...if that isnt racism then I no not what is.
