Nikka is quite right. Unless there has been massive changes since I was there 4 years ago, you need to learn some Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese. Not alot of English is spoken there. Asking Hilda for assistance if she is there at the time of your journey also a good idea. And to thank her, maybe take her out to dinner, have some awesome Brazilian BBQ! Avoid using a smartphone to translate simply because you're waving around this nice shiny expensive gadget making you a target to get robbed. If you're going to another country, try to learn the language before hand, learn about the customs and how things work beforehand. Remember, you are a guest when in a foreign country.

If you're from the USA or Canada, your smartphone also will not likely work in Brazil and even if it did, the roaming charges would be outrageous. The exception would be if you had an unlocked, quad-band GSM phone, like I do. this would allow you to purchase a prepaid SIM locally in Brazil and use that for data and phone service.

Even then the UTMS/3G frequencies are different so you'd be stuck with the slower EDGE data speeds that use the regular GSM bands.

...yeah, I'm a geek :geek: who knows entirely too much about this stuff.

Distintas is a great site for brazil and ton of other countries for that matter. Ive used it a ton of times in a ton of places and was always pleased. Plus, while it's not a "dating" site, it will give you an opportunity to familiarize yourself with what your area has to offer and you can basically plan ahead.
