Would anyone know anything about the pros and cons for surgical alteration of the vocal cords to attain a higher more feminine pitch?

"There are several types of voice feminization techniques, Crico-Thyroid Approximation (CTA), Laser Assisted Voice Adjustment (LAVA), Vocal Cord Shortening (Anterior Web Creation), Thyroid Cartilage and Vocal Cord Reduction and Laryngoplasty. All procedures are designed to make a genetic Male’s voice box smaller and vocal cords shorter in an attempt to raise the comfortable speaking pitch."

Have a friend who is looking into this but she doesn;t know anyone who has gone through this procedure.

I know two gals who have gone through it. One told me she regrets it; the other doesn't sound too natural (IMHO)...

My understanding is that the surgery is an inprecise art at the very least. Results are never guaranteed, and in many (most ?) cases, result in an unnatural whispering hoarsness that seldom resembles a gg female voice.

SRS is serious enough, but revisions can be made, whereas voice surgery may result in permanent and constantly audible damage.

Definately not one I would undertake....

Both videos sound feminine to me, but I can understand that if SRS is scary voice surgery is even scarier.

I would also like to know if anybody has had any of this surgery, or why not and what suitable alternative did you find to talking in falsetto which is only real option I know about.

Agree with the last post. The girl before the op sounded fine and it is a scary sounding type of surgery. I'd avoid it unless you sound like Tom Waits.

Ahhh! Good to know and thanks for the feedback. With vocal cords, you've really only got one chance to get it right.

people can always do the Andrea James "Finding Your Female Voice" vocal lessons. I did these when I was younger and they helped me understand my voice a lot better.

seems insanely risky.
And I've never really met anyone (man or woman) who likes the sound of their own voice.

The only thing with this is your so limited because, her vocal placement is so tight... If she was to be in a club and yell over loud music shed still sound like a guy. Muscle memory training is the best, or Start hormones young and avoid male puberty, but that's easy said than done.

Live with what you've got to a point, but when this person is 100% passaable except for her voice.

And thank you TSJizelle for the link, will pass it on!

Yea I've seen these vocal lessons and Aaso there is another lady can't think of her name right now. Was not sure if they were worth the effort, sounds like you think they might be worth a shot.

Certainly I have heard some real horror stories and I think the surgery is still at an early stage. It's not something I'd want to be a guinea-pig for and I think vocal coaching and exercise is a better approach. A lot if it is to do with the way you speak rather than strictly the pitch--women modulate their voices a lot more than men and there are lots of things a good vocal coach can show you. I don't personally mind quite a low-pitched voice on a girl, but it is true that some people....just have very deep voices. Which will need some working on.
