Generally the sort of films I despise are those cynically produced by the Hollywood machine simply to make money - with no concern whatsoever for their value beyond the bottom line. So poor remakes of great films figure high on the list.

I also find repugnant the gratuitously violent torture horror genre, splatter films and dumb vampire or other horror films directed at the teenage market.

Essentially dumb films generally. But as i say hate is too strong s word for films. Save that for worthier targets.

Sarah Jessica Parker!

I try really hard to hate Sarah Jessica Parker. She's not attractive and works in projects that women I date seem to enjoy but I detest. She then goes on Leno's couch and is extremely nice and I can't hate her even though I'm fascinated with a wart on her face that puts anything of Lemmy's to shame. Her husband, Mathew Broderick, is boring like watching paint dry.

I dislike "A Mighty Wind" and any project that brings that group together. I just don't think they're funny, and I don't find them to be as smart as they obviously think they are. I find them patronizing at best.

I'll never forgive Parker Posey for getting involved with them.

All kinda American War and Italian Horror Movies were shot in your country. Growing up you must've feared being hit with napalm or devoured by zombies. When you look past the fog it's just Francis Ford Coppola or Bruno Mattei waving around a bullhorn. Hearts of Darkness is a fascinating documentary about the making of Apocalypse Now.

Fields flick...the shrieks of laughter will prove my point..."The Bank Dick"...LOL..!!

90% of the movies being made in the last decade. Anything where CGi dominates the story.
Not much of a fantasy fan, either - Lord of the Rings (I enjoyed the 1978 version, however), Harry Potter, the last 6 Star Wars or however many George Lucas has recently made.

I saw Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol in the London IMAX, a fantastic experience and the only way to see the film I think, which otherwise is the usual loony-wants-to-nuke-the-world-only-Cruise-can-save-us. IMAX is definitely worth the admission fee, the scene in Dubai in particular. As long as you don't take the film seriously.

With regard to Genres:

Animals: I avoid films like National Velvet, Seabiscuit, Any Which Way But Loose because animals are a part of the film, doesn't work for me.

Vampires: vampire films are fundamentally films that celebrate the hatred of women, and the importance of a religious faith that relegates women to the status of breeding machines while elevating men to the status of saviour; or they are symbolic devices for creating an otherness about people which could be done more intelligently a hundred other ways. There are other vehicles for getting women to shed their clothes, its called porn.

Horror Films: I don't understand this genre, in either literature or film -I understand horror as part of the invention of the devil and hell and the medieval discourse in which human behaviour was expected to conform to whatever the Holy Roman Empire dictated, or be condemned to hell -there are various murals in English churches made to frighten people this way; in 2011 its just an excuse to show people being subjected to sickening acts of violence -having seen enough of the real thing in a London hospital years ago, I have no desire to indulge the sick fantasy of some third-rate director or the equally sick people who pay to see this drivel. If this is your idea of entertainment, get some therapy.

For me, I think this thread would be easier to list movies that I like. Too many that I hate. Hollywood has lost all creativity. Why? The front runner to the Oscars Best Picture is a silent film, The Artist. I thought going back and rejuvenating slasher films and comic books was a cop out. This is ridiculous.

In literature, horror done right can be quite entertaining (Poe, duMaupassant, Gogol, Lovecraft). Horror in film is quite another thing. Some movies - The Descent comes to mind - use the premise of something horrible to explore relationships, character etc. But I think many - like The Human Centipede - are made to indulge sick fantasies and to feed the equally sick fantasies of the people who watch them. Not that I'm judging anyone ;)

If I ever am allowed to make a Horror Movie the sluttiest girl will be the last one standing. What does a virginal, sheltered, goody 2 shoes know about surviving the attack from a maniac in the woods? She should be butchered while the opening credits roll.

So about 98% of them in that case? Someone gave me Mark Kermode's The Good, The Bad and The Multiplex for Christmas which I am enjoying immensely as much for his curmudgeonly commentary on all things blockbuster and the sheer misery of the multiplex experience as anything else, but what he says about the money-driven values of Hollywood nails all that's wrong with commercial cinema.

I probably go to the movies about 2-3 times a year. I agree with much of what you are saying. Most of what I watch is from the 1970s which was a more honest era of film.

Many who go into art for money instead of the thrill of creating end up with neither money nor creation.

I like the symbolism at the end of 3 when she falls into the fire and the alien pops out of her chest. I also like when Lance Henriksen yells "I'm not a robot!" for some reason I just find that really funny. Event Horizon is great, hell in space!:)

Horror films, when done correctly don't require any gore at all. I make no apology for Saw and its ilk. Good horror builds a sense of suspense and dread and actually frightens you, it doesn't (necessarily) gross you out. Dino mentioned Event Horizon, great flick. The Paranormal Activity series are cheap, somewhat gimmicky but effective. Humans are the only species that enjoys spicy food and I would bet the only species that enjoys being frightened and for similar reasons. So embrace your humanity and get the shit scared out of you now and then.

Oh and vampire movies do more than violate women, they explore the ancient eros-thanatos connection. That's why they're still part of the public consciousness and always will be.

On the original question: I hate these new holiday "all-star" romantic comedies like New Year's Eve and Valentine's Day. This is how little regard the public is given: "We don't need a plot, just a bunch semi-recognizable moderately attractive people and a holiday and people will pay to see it!"

FFS, America, have a little self-respect.

And Pre-Matrix Fishburne is always cool, too. My only complaint was its resemblance to Sphere.
