It's a content management and blogging system. Secondly, if you want to get technical, you "redesigned" your Wordpress blog when you applied somebody else's theme. What you did afterward is only redesign by loose definition and better described as modification. That may be anal as all hell, but both definitions work. Mine is just more correct.

It wasn't my intention to get all picky about any of this or prove you wrong, but if you're going to insult my intelligence, you should expect me to say something. Don't badger me as though I don't know a thing about Wordpress. I've hosted three Wordpress blogs, written a theme from scratch, and use a portablized Wordpress blog with plugins running off of XAMPP and a flashdrive to collect customer information while I repair PCs. If you knew anything about me (which you obviously don't), you'd know that I already have built my website 'from the ground up'. What you did was post a completely unnecessary reply to a post you knew nothing about just to boost your own ego... and unfortunately, you caught me at a moment when I was tired and cranky already... thus my rather tame reply. Otherwise, I probably would have just ignored it and moved on.

This latest diatribe from you though is rather comical given your apparent aversion to 'drama'. I see you can give but not take a little 'goading'... which I think is always humorous to watch.

And by the way, anyone with as extensive knowledge in the computer tech industry would know that you don't just 'apply' a Wordpress theme as extensive as Suffusion to an already existing WEBSITE. I realize it's not exactly convenient to ditch Wordpress, Wordpress themes, and CMS' when you're constantly updating content, trying to earn money, and you're really just attempting to find the simplest and quickest way to get results. That's not something I can knock you on; it's smart. It's just not web design or redesign if your last theme was something somebody else scripted and your new theme is something somebody else scripted; CSS modifications or not.

There is a ridiculously big difference between a web designer and a theme hacker. Theme hackers only need to know a little CSS, some light PHP, and visual ascetics. If you want to learn how to design or redesign a website, you need to learn HTML, CSS, PHP, photoshop/imageready, some javascript, flash, design standards, and color theory. It's a little more involved and takes a lot longer to learn. It's not a better method and it's certainly a lot slower.

I'm not saying that theme hacking ain't shit and you don't know anything or that you should stop using WordPress in favor of months and months spent scripting everything from scratch. That's insane. Just call it what it is, though. That's my only gripe. You could have come a little more clear about your "website" being a themed Wordpress CMS rather than a site you designed from scratch if you wanted cookies, credit, and respect. It would have also been incredibly helpful had you simply not asked for criticism if you weren't prepared for opinions; positive or negative.

Bygones are bygones and I appreciate the apology. In return, I apologize for calling you a dolt. Clearly, by reading your post in the laptop thread, you have knowledge of computers and tech.

Just for the record... the existing site that I replaced WAS AN HTML based website that I built from the ground up. I think you're probably thinking that I 'redesigned' my BLOG... which, then, I'd probably agree with you. Replacing one theme with another is relatively easy. I think it is being lost on you that I already had an existing HTML site that I hand wrote every piece of code for, except for snippets here and there. This 'redesign' is a complete departure from that.

Criticism I can take with no problem. It is how I've built my site through the years... by taking criticism and ideas from people I respect and implementing them. I was just a bit offended by the offhanded way the work that I was doing for the past weekend was so easily dismissed. Again, I was tired and cranky, otherwise I would probably have read it, chuckled, and moved on.

GrimFusion, you're confusing web design (what Krissy said she did, "redesign") and web development. Two closely related, but distinct animals. Put simply, web design refers to the "look and feel" of a website; the presentation of content (and by extension the creation of that content), while web development involves creating the site's functionality (via PHP, Perl, CFM, ASP or other programming and database schema and queries via SQL), and and testing its usability. Krissy didn't say (initially) that she redeveloped her site, she said she redesigned it (later, she did point out that she indeed redeveloped it, from her original ground-up HTML version to her CMS version utilizing WordPress content management features).

A designer does not need to know PHP, CFM, ASP or any other server-side scripting language, SQL, or any other "backend" systems; a designer does need to know graphic design, layout, Photoshop (or similar photo editing software), color theory, etc. Likewise, a developer does not need to know any of these, but does need expertise in a select development environment (e.g., LAMP: Linux-Apache-MySql-PHP, which is my range). Of course it helps to have both, and both designers and developers need to grasp the basics of HTML and CSS.

Krissy redesigned her site, making extensive modifications to the presentation layer of her site using the Suffusion WordPress theme. She gains great benefit by working with the WP CMS. Personally, as a web architect for more than 15 years, I prefer to work in straight code to either a WYSIWYG editor or a CMS; I find both to be more confining and slower than working directly with the code. But when I consider that Krissy has over 500 galleries, over 50,000 photos, and over 200 videos (!), using a CMS makes superb sense for managing all that. When she solicits feedback on her redesign, she's looking for comments on layout, graphics, usability, "look and feel" and not on backend programming, which really should be transparent if the site is well-designed...and hers is, imho.
