Rochina is the biggest slum in all of the Americas, so it gets tv coverage. In Rio it is because of the drug and drug related crime that happens to tourists on Copacabana beach and Ipenema. Of course they want to clean up crime before the World Cup and Olympics. That isn't corruption that is common sense.

Brazil is becoming an economic power house and is the strongest economy in South America. Copacabana and Ipenema beach have been going through a beautification process for the last 10 years, long before they won either sporting bid. It was only a matter of time before the police would take over the Favelas. No major city or country can be taken seriously on the world stage if it has major pockets of lawlessness in it's biggest cities. The World Cup and Olympics just given them a deadline.

Sao Paulo has been invading smaller Favelas and tearing them down for years. It is mainly so buildings can be built. It is nothing new.
