Nov. 11, Veteran's Day, is the day when we remember soldiers - fallen (those who have died in action), who've returned from war and those who are still fighting throughout the world, but especially in Iraq & Afghanistan.
For us Americans, we've been at war for +8 years and many of our soldiers have been away from their families for a long time, so it is very important to us.
Many of us know someone who has fought or died in the last 8 years. Nov 11 is a time to say thank you to those alive and put flowers on the graves of those who are dead.

For today:

THE FINAL INSPECTION

The soldier stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

'Step forward now, you soldier,
How shall I deal with you ?
Have you always turned the other cheek ?
To My Church have you been true?'

The soldier squared his shoulders and said,
'No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God, forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
Except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

'Step forward now, you soldier,
You've borne your burdens well.
Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell.'

Putting it bluntly, it means shut the fuck up for two minutes! :shrug

"and when he gets to heaven,
to saint peter he will tell:
"Just another soldier reporting, sir
I've served my time in hell."

I was on a railway station this morning and - bang on 11.00 - when there was meant to be a two minute silence the station announcer piped up and offered a lengthy explanation that there would be no public announcements during the two minute silence, out of respect - and that if anyone did need to talk to a station staff member they should only do it in a dire emergency etc etc... by the time he had finished he'd been talking for about a minute and a half. So 30 second silence on the british public transport system. A rather grudging sort of respect - or a man with a faulty watch.

But yes - respect for the men and women who have fought and died.

A brief return for a solemn occasion.

Here's the lyrics of a song I wrote a few years back about this very day.

Armistice Day

1. Shadows lengthen quickly on November afternoons
Streetlamps flicker early to welcome winter gloom
And as the days grow shorter, memories grow long
There’s something in the air today, echoes of old songs
In each lapel a splash of red, on each corner there’s a tray
Remember those you never knew, each sad Armistice Day

2. Young men mown down in thousands for a dead imperial cause
Faith in King and Country, the lie that fuels all wars
Lost generations haunt the years, women fill the void with tears
Old men march each November, reliving ancient fears
Their numbers down to nothing, as the shadows fade away
Remember those you never knew, each sad Armistice Day

Bridge: I have walked the fields of Flanders, I have heard the bugles call
Wept beside the Menin Gate, and watched the poppies slowly fall
Heard the chink of rusting helmets as the ploughshares lift the clay
Remember those you never knew each sad Armistice Day

3. And our eyes lift up from Flanders mud to distant burning sands
Where boys in khaki keep the peace in angry foreign lands
Defending politicians’ lies, beneath a hostile sun
Nothing ever changes, just the young men and the guns
Watching the parades pass by, as we hear the bugles play
Remember those you never knew, each sad Armistice Day

Coda: The last post and silence for all those left behind
And each slow dusk a drawing down of blinds
We share their grief just once a year, they feel it every day
Remember those you never knew each sad Armistice Day

This was written last year by the UK's poet Laureate carol ann duffy.

That moment when the soldier's soul
slipped through his wounds, seeped
through the staunching fingers of his friend
then, like a shadow, slid across a field
to vanish, vanish, into textless air . . .
there would have been a bell in Perth,
Llandudno, Bradford, Winchester,
rung by a landlord in a sweating, singing pub
or by an altar-boy at Mass - in Stoke-on-Trent,
Leicester, Plymouth, Crewe, in Congresbury,
Littleworth - an ice-cream van jingling in a park;
a door pushed open to a jeweller's shop;
a songbird fluttering from a tinkling cat - in Ludlow,
Wolverhampton, Taunton, Hull - a parish church
chiming out the hour; the ringing end of school -
in Wigan, Caythorpe, Peterborough, Ipswich,
Inverness, King's Lynn, Malvern, Leeds -
a deskbell in a quiet, dark hotel; bellringers' practice
heard by Sunday cricketers; the first of midnight's bells
at Hogmanay - in Birkenhead, Motherwell, Rhyl -
there would have been a bell
in Chester, Fife, Bridgend, Wells, Somerton,
Newcastle, in city and in town and countryside -
the crowded late night bus; a child's bicycle;
the old, familiar, clanking cow-bells of the cattle.

I believe the world will come to an end, well, maybe not the world but I believe mankind will perish off the earth maybe soon. I am very religious in my ways, not so much the old testament but the more so the new testament. I believe in revelations, that there will be much destruction and pain, but when this will happen I don't know.

I now that evolution exits, I don't doubt that. But what I do doubt is that we all came from some big bang. Until someone can show me exactly how the bringing happened I will keep to my Christian beliefs.

With that said,, this post is my 666th post made on 11-11-11 at the time 11:11.
Let the beginning of the end commence.

Veglia
Cima Quattro il 23 dicembre 1915

Un'intera nottata
buttato vicino
a un compagno
massacrato
con la sua bocca
digrignata
volta al plenilunio
con la congestione
delle sue mani
penetrata
nel mio silenzio
ho scritto
lettere piene d'amore

Non sono mai stato
tanto
attaccato alla vita

I was out having a bit of a life beyond here today, watching trains and ran into a fellow who was on the last Seal team sent to Vietnam, doing something on the ground there as opposed to river patrol. I thanked him for his service and told him I thought he was quite lucky to be alive. He agreed.:)
