Can't go wrong with any of the Cannon Films/Golan-Globus Charles Bronson or Chuck Norris films.

Like almost everything else in the 80s, films became loud, crass and disposable. Best thing that happened was the invention of the VCR and the availability of the great hollywood movies of the 70s on video.

A few, yes. And Blade Runner is one of my favourite films. But nothing to compare with the 70s - the Godfather trilogy, Taxi Driver, The French Connection, The Exorcist, Apocalypse Now, Badlands, The Outlaw Josey Wales.....

You're right about '70s movies, it was a great time for American cinema. But Godfather III wasn't made until 1990, and doesn't really live up to the other two. You could add to your list Mean Streets, Dog Day Afternoon, Network, Chinatown, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Dirty Harry, The Conversation, Patton, The Sting, Marathon Man...hmm maybe a thread for 70's movies is needed...

I agree. What I meant was that the 70s was the last time that the big studios took a chance on auteurs and put money down to enable the likes of Scorsese, Friedkin, Polanski, Coppola etc to put their dreams and visions on celluloid. Too many 80s films reflected the narrow, selfish and ruthless values of the decade, and in an ironic sense Wall Street was probably the most extreme example.

True again. Then in the 90s and subsequently Hollywood has relied on the staples of remakes, franchises, cgi and 3D to turn out low quality schlock that fills the cinemas with the necessary demographic of teens and early 20s. There's no room in Hollywood for artists anymore. Mainstream Hollywood has very little to offer me, I'm afraid.

The encouraging development has been the rise of independent cinema, for which Robert Redford as the pioneer with Sundance deserves a lot of credit.

Absolutely. The studios occasionally get a good film out there, but you really have to hunt for them, and they don't stick around very long. So I am very appreciative of the indies. Which is not to say that I don't appreciate a good popcorn flick, either, like the Bourne movies or the recent Batman flicks or something. Don't get me started on the 3D bullshit. Seriously, does every movie need to be in 3D? It's just smoke and mirrors to distract attention from the mediocrity of the movie. A turd wrapped up in a pretty box with a bow on top is still a turd. I want to watch the movie, not be in it. My eyes already see in 3 dimensions - that's what they do. And now there's this new thing called D-Box, where the seats move and shake during the movie. Ridiculous. More smoke and mirrors. It reeks of desperation on the part of the studios. It's kind of sad.

A few, yes, . . The Outlaw Josey Wales.....

OK- That flick is awesome! I can recite most of it word for word.

My favorite line: "I never surrendered neither. But, uh, they took my horse and made him surrender. "

If you like westerns I recommend Sam Peckinpah's "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid"- though you probably already know that's where "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" came from. Kris Kristofferson, Bib Dylan as "Alias", great score, tasteful 70's pop star nudity and (in the director's cut) an orgy scene.

Also a flick called "My Name is Nobody". Perfect satire but a decent western too.

Great minds....Blade Runner is my favorite, too. The 80s also introduced the Coen Brothers, that's something! Oliver Stone had a handful of great films as well, and David Mamet's words made their debut as well. You can add "Jaws" to your 70s list, which I agree was the last great decade for Hollywood and film in general.

I love cheesy B Horror movies from the 80's. I've been looking for one I haven't seen since I was a kid. I can't remember the name of it, but these aliens that somewhat looked like Hammerhead from Star Wars were impregnating women on earth and they had these tubes that pumped their semen into the women. Anyone know this movie?
