Well he does have one talent. And that is pretending to throw people around, snap their limbs, and kick them in the balls in interesting ways.

And he's a 7th-Dan blackbelt in Aikido. So in his prime I bet he could have snapped Chuck Norris' limbs after kicking him in the balls.

Charles Bronson was putting on more believable fight scenes when he was 73. Seagal is entertaining but far from good. He's so fat now he breaks into a sweat when he lifts his leg to cut the cheese.

Yeah lately he hasn't been a world beater. But in his prime I bet he was lethal. An ex coworker of mine has a 2nd Dan black belt in Aikido (I'm not sure if I'm typing it correctly) and the motherfucker was crazy. If he had a few too many after work eventually he would be doing Steven Segal type of stuff to his mates. Most of his conflicts were settled with black eyes.

Steven Segal is 7th Dan. I bet he learned how to Haduken some fireballs out of his fists at one time.

This must be the funniest thread I have read here, its taken me nearly 15 minutes to recover from fits of laughter!

Of Americans, well its obvious: Michael Jackson, Marilyn Monroe and Elvis, three people completely devoid of talent, unable to sing, dance, write, act or barely speak: a disgrace to modern culture, I could go on and on.

An obscure figure in the UK as luckily he is unknown outside it: Jonathan Ross. I am not a violent person, but I saw this lame excuse for a man on Wardour St some years ago and thought: this is my chance: to knock his block off. OK I chickened out, but he remains the reason why I would happily swap 1 second of Ross TV to watch 7 hours of Hungarian film about the decline of a collective farm...aka Satantango

You're entitled to your opinion but I will disagree with you that Michael Jackson was talentless. Perhaps not obvious to you but he was an innovative dancer, a good composer who knew how to create a good hook, and a decent, though simple, lyricist. Let's not even get into the fact he produced a lot of his own work.

Perry is a first class opportunist.
If being a liberal would have gotten him into the Texas Governors Mansion he would be a hero of the left.

He has the talent of making people believe his BS.

Hey, no one could have guessed LBJ would be a liberal president that passed so much civil rights legislation.

Hes no dummy, he knows his electorate, and the national electorate is not the republican Texas electorate, or the republican primary electorate...

Hes playing the Christianity card to get the fundies who will never support a Mormon.

Ron Paul is for free markets and fewer regulations, and he's been the most consistent on those issues. That will help some industries and hurt others, so that could be a zero sum game. He also raises a lot of money from individuals and has a TON of grassroots support, being the father of the true, original Tea Party.

You're probably right, but I'm trying to keep my optimism. He may not be the candidate that big business wants, but he's the candidate America needs.

He may have misspelled 'magna cum laude,' but it's an honor based on your GPA, so I doubt AA had anything to do with it. I think the jury's hung on the Harvard Law Review position though since it would have been given to him during AA's peak.

[EDIT: For those who misunderstood this, the argument is that AA creates race inequality, not that it was a crutch for Obama.]

I guess I could always vote for the Lib candidate like I did last time around. Last time it was Bob Barr. Yes, he's the guy who impeached Clinton, whom I adore by the way, but that's a whole other story. Maybe next year it will be somebody equally unelectable, but thanks to the electoral college and the fact that I live in California, it really makes no difference.

Sure, but that could also end up being his Achilles' heel. When it comes to conflicts of character, he who controls the media controls the race, and with Obama being the sitting President, Perry's going to have quite the uphill battle if he wants to take him head on. You have no idea how he's going to be portrayed, and if he starts negative, believe me, it'll cost him. Say 'man of action' and 'Texas' in the same sentence and it will magically transport you back to 2000. I think America's done that dance already. Or at least that's how Obama's team will frame it, as they should. Comparisons to W are going to kill his approval with independents.

Republicans are in a better shape than Dems, considering the situation 4 years ago, today's GOP standing is a testament... to Obama's failure...

Perry is an experienced campaigner, and looking at his campaigns he also has great political instincts... His bio is also inspiring, a farm-boy that made it big, veteran, run his own family business, got involved in politics to bring real change to Texas legislature,...

Compared to Palin, Bachman and Romney, hes a winner... and his experience is far greater than any of those...

But he has proved himself to be mediocre - a huge disappointment in the FORTY ONE (count them) years since the Beatles split up. Hailed as one half of one of the greatest song writing teams of all time (a huge over estimation in itself) he has failed to prove that claim had any substance - producing decades of maundering drivel, the occasional good tune and hundreds of songs of total twaddle. I support Prospero's nomination of Sir Paul McCartney -Yesterday was famously his song, beginning life as 'scrambled eggs', but it was the arrangement by George Martin that gave it a dimension McCartney probably never thought it had -in fact, it was Martin who gave the Beatles that extra dimension which made them, at the time, an innovative group. Taken apart, none of them had any talent. The collective had something for a while, and it passed; McCartney has long since been unable to sing, sad but true, he lives on his reputation.

I saw Liza Minelli in concert a few years when she was I think 63, and she was simply amazing, I was certainly amazed: some people are born to this life and never lose that sparkle or the ability to entertain; McCartney I have to say, has the charisma of a cheese sandwich. Is it true he will be the headline act in the opening ceremony of the Olympics?

Nah, I'll give Macca the benefit of the doubt. I'm not a huge Beatles fan but I think he was the most talented of the so-called "fab four" and even if a lot of what he's done since 1970 has been mediocre, he's still written and co-written more great songs than most other pop stars imho.

And let's face it, most pop stars and rockers end up making crap records later on in their careers. And even a classical genius like Stravinsky arguably couldn't match the intensity of his earlier output (The Rite Of Spring, Petrushka, Firebird...) in his later years.

By the way, like the Bosch av! :)

That is affirmative action in practice

You and Bella are just stoopid.

Affirmative Action is a policy used to diversify a campus student body, it doesn't mean, 'hey I'm Black and can't read, lemme in to your university.'

At top U.S. schools, the number of African American students is between 2-5% and most of them are Black WOMEN, well below their national census numbers.

Affirmative Action has NOTHING AT ALL to do with how a student performs once they are on campus.

You think other Harvard Law grad students were doing Obama a 'solid' by selecting him to be awarded the most prestigious honor on campus, simply because he was Black??

You're fucking insane.

ANd this whole thread is idiotic and presumptuous IMO.

What is the OP's blindingly brilliant 'talent' that gives her the arrogance to judge who has talent and who doesn't??

And what is up for debate about Obama being elected the first African American to elected editor of the HLR, Bella??

It's documented. Or is that some lib conspiracy???

I'm having an academic argument here (as usual). I never said a racist word about anything, ever. And my argument isn't even that AA is what propelled Obama. I argued that AA created the possibility and that it creates race-based tensions. That's what's racist, not me. I went back and added to the post in question, just so we're all clear, but I'm shocked that I should have to.

Yes, Tralika, but what I think Prospero was saying, that I agree with, is that none of them were written after the Beatles split. Had he not performed at all since those days, he would still be remembered. He clearly has a need to perform, to be seen, and probably demands number one billing, but other than a reputation forged in the 1960s, he doesn't deserve it, as he can no longer sing. The same is true of Placido Domingo, but I would be lynched in some circles for saying so, he should have retired years ago but his colossal ego won't allow it.

I also agree with the disposal of Michael McIntyre, I don't know who writes his material, perhaps he does it himself, but he fills that niche in British comedy which can be x-rated after 9pm or acceptable before it, but for the omission of a few dirty words.

I'm not going to 'jack this thread. No one said anything about anyone being racist..funny that you went there.

Affirmative Action didn't 'create' the possibility for someone like Obama. AA didn't make him academically qualified to attend Yale undergrad or Harvard Law.
AA admissions policies essentially are a pro-active effort by universities to seek out qualified minority candidates; those students aren't being admitted simply because they ARE a minority.

No university admits applicants on purely academic reasons. There are gender, geographic, economic, exceptional circumstances and legacy criteria used in evaluating every candidate.

When someone implies student X got into Y school ONLY because he/she was Black or a woman, sorry but that's an idiotic statement.

The trouble with humour is twofold. I. It's about the most subjective thing when it comes to what amuses or doesn't amuse you and 2. It's a generational thing. What a 20 year old laughs at is often very different from what makes a 40 year old highly amused.

Re McCartney. I didn't say he had never written a decent song in 40 years. maybe three or four. But from the titantic heights of the best of The Beatles to The Frog Chorus or Silly Love Songs is a giant decline.

I agree with JigglyGormley - listing those minor blips who are praised for less than nothing isn't worthwhile. Only the BIG name ho are praised and adulated - and there are plenty of them. Which is why I singled out paul McCartney. There are thousands of music stars who're worse than him - but simply not worth mentioning. And like Jiggly it would be a waste of my time to list them and everyone else's time to read.

Don't worry TraLika, your judgement on Saunders is absolutely right. i must be one of the few people in the UK who thought Absolutely Fabulous was trash. Saunders is not funny, and she cannot act -not just looking into the camera, but barely able to speak which should at least be a requirement in the job (unless you specialise in some of Beckett's more obscure works). Her sidekicks, Dawn French and Lenny Henry are similarly incapable -Henry in particular is an offensive prat. Does anyone recall this jackass on the comedy show OTT in the 80s Tarrant used to host, prancing around showing a mutilated hand and shrieking Katanga! Katanga my friends, Katanga!? Did Henry know what it was that actually happened in Katanga?

The French and Saunders show was not really comedy, it consisted of pieces of 'satire' which were actually childish mimicky because real satire must contain a truth in its target: when French and Saunders don tutu's to compete with Darcey Bussell as the Sugar Plum Fairy, its not funny, its not even sad; its just a waste of time. I could go on and on (as usual) but will stop. At least in The Fast Show there was something to laugh at.

If we're expanding the definition to people who've gone way past their talent sell-by date, how about the Stones?

I'd say most rock/pop artists from the 60s and 70s are past their sell by date. I never really liked the Stones that much but their early stuff has grown on me.

The Stones have entered into the zone of famous just for surviving... but can anyone bar the most diehard fan name a single song they've cut in the past 20 years. Jagger is a pardoy. Charlie is a good drummer - but his big band as far better than anything the stones proper did recently. Ronnie Wood is a wizened little twerp and Keef... well his book was darn good yarn actually He tkes his music seriously but the band hould give up.

I've seen them just twice. once as a kid before they were famous in a little club and once in a stadium. One was shiney and super sleekly produced but the early show was waaaaayyyy better.
