New York Hotels???

Sorry, I did not know where else on HA to post this question. I am planning a trip to Manhattan for this fall and am trying to find a nice hotel maybe centrally located so I can get around the city. Don't even know where to begin. Anyways I was on one of the hotel search sites and the prices rocked me. Am I buying the room?? I would love to pay under $200 a night if possible. Any suggestions?
