Friday will be the 10th anniversary of that terrible day which we will all remember for the rest of our lives, the day that the world changed irrevocably and for ever.

I'd like to take this opportunity of offering all my American friends (and occasional adversaries) on HA my very best wishes for a good day in the morning. My thoughts will be with you.

And please, please, please, can any further contributions to this thread focus solely on the commemoration, and not the political ramifications or the conspiracies? The dead deserve that dignity.

Thank you.

Thanks Robert. I will avoid as much 9/11 coverage as I can on Sunday because it makes me too angry. Such a shame Bin Laden can only die once as he should return to Earth an infinite amount of times to die a different death every day. I pray I see him in Hell.

There were more than just Americans lost in the towers. Like the 'tag' says '9/11...The day that changed the world.' Those responsible could never die enough deaths...

I was in a high rise at the corner of Church and Cortlandt staring out the window when the first plane came in. For those NYers out thee, the Century 21 building.

I still get freaked the fuck out every year. I watched a little too much. At the time, as the burni g jumped, I thought "someone needs to watch this".

I wish I hadn't.

I didn't leave my building until the second plane hit. Oddly, it was beautiful- a nose cone of fire coming out of the second building, dissipating into a fireball and throwing debris toward us.

It's terrible what everyone had to go through that day. From the outside looking in it was horrific to watch and hearts went out to everyone involved. But, to say the world changed forever is a bit of a stretch. I know it happened in your world, but it didn't happen in THE world. I know many people in other countries who's lives were never affected and life for them carried on rather quickly after the event. I'm not downplaying the event but, tragedies have struck in other parts of the world but Americans don't look at that as world-changing because it didn't happen to them.

I'm not downplaying the event in any way, just trying to offer another perspective.

True, there's countries that has their own issues and civil wars to worry about. The event changed America, but the world, nahw

About them towers though, I still to this day find it too hard to believe that them plans alone can knock down both them towers...

I agree, SirCums. When I see clips of the planes hitting the towers I feel like I'm seeing it again for the first time. And who knows, maybe it wasn't the planes alone.

I saw something online once, a "message" from Palestine or some such: hey, America- your 9/11 is our 24/7.

It's a good point.

The thing that sucks about the anniversary is that all our Law Enforcement/Military/ is on High alert because of the FEAR that another major attack is planned for the 10th anniversary.

It is very noticeable in the El Paso/Juarez Mexico border, where the border crossings , both on foot and in a vehicle are ridiculously long because of extensive checking of cars and pedestrians.

If I had to guess what a terrorist thinks like, I would figure the USA is expecting and guarding for an attack, and would definitely not attack on the anniversary day or close. In all reality, the next big one they do ( I personally think it's inevitable) will be on some random date and year (at least random in the eyes of Americans , but planned way ahead by the terrorists) and the cycle will repeat.

r.i.p 9-11 victims and heroes. You're in our hearts forever.

As a person who always lived and still does in New York 9-11-01 will always stay with me. Every year on this day brings back memories I sometimes want to forget, but we never should. I can't watch all the memorals and stock footage for it always is heart breaking. I did visit my local firehouse and police precient everytime this year and thank the brave men and women who do their jobs everyday. For the victims I will muster myself to go to the 9-11 memoral it will be hard to relive the day but like I said NEVER FORGET. God Bless everyone!!:grouphug

Should we care about the first 9/11 in Chile? I mean, the CIA-backed military coup happened September 11, 1973....
Over 3,000 people were killed. A fascist government took over. The Presidential palace was bombed and the President killed. Should we care? Of course we should. But it doesn't get a lot of media attention.

Stay focused Ben. You're always all over the fucking map. Damn sure there's lots of bad shit that's happened all over the world...from Cambodia to Moscow to Berlin, and yes to Chilie...but this thread was dedicated to what happend in lower Manhattan...maybe some day I'll think about Chilie, but not today.

As a NYer who knew several people who perished on that day, i wanna thank all the people who had kind words to say. And to the 1 or 2 of you that want to take this discussion in another direction.....ay, thats perogative. All i know is i say prayers to all the victims of terrorism, all over the globe, past and present, because NOBODY deserves to die that way

It was a horrible day with an even worse legacy. Anyone else sick of the TV emotional porn today? Budweiser and AllState among others had annoying and shameless commercials to profit off of a terrorist attack. Shame!

A viscous crime was committed on 09/11/2001....one that should indeed be remembered because it has changed the world in a negative way for the foreseeable future....so sad that it was perpetrated by our own government in it's unquenchable thirst for resources. Wake up people!

Impressed by the dignity of New York and its inhabitants and the American people yesterday.

I had been in the WTC a few days before the attack, at Windows on The World, and met many of the nice men and women who worked there. One of my first thoughts after the attack was of those people , many of whom will have died because of the breakfast event that was going on there. A sad and tragic day. As was said of another such day it will "live in infamy."

I think anyone who was ever in the WTC has a weird feeling about those memories, really awful. We need to offer all care for the people involved, no questions asked.

2 things, i'll be short lol.

we will never know the truth, there have been a lot of days that caused significant change.

the biggest change after that incident, was realisation. realisation, that as a country, we are as vulnerable as the world elsewhere.

This is the final 911 call from one of the victims of the WTC collapse. His name was Kevin Cosgrove. He was the vice president of claims for the Aon Corporation, an insurance company. He was calling from the 105th floor of the south tower about 50 minutes after the second plane hit it. The call starts at 9:53am and ends at 9:58am when the tower collapses. The clip is four minutes and 54 seconds long and the collapse occurs at 4:38. This clip was played at the Zacarias Moussaoui trial on April 11, 2006.

Not sure it changed the world, we're still doing the same old shit for the same old reasons.
But it was certainly a wake up!
