How big of an age difference is too big for a relationship to work? 10 years? 15? 20? Is the problem more that there is not a lot in common between the two, or that the friends and family don't like it?

O think the acceptable range increases as you age, and I think it's due to commonalities. At 25 it's stretching to get involved with a 20 year old sneaking into bars. But at 40 you find plenty in common with a 30 year old.

But 18 year olds are almost mandatory, no matter your age!

I like the way you think MdR Dave!:)

Most people hook up on a long term basis with others within 4-5 years of their own age. I think the conscious reasons are many but having similar cultural experiences makes a difference, i.e., broadly similar historical experiences during their lives. The less conscious reasons may include sensing that the other is at a similar developmental phase in life.

That said, there are so many reasons for relationships of any type to succeed or not that I am reluctant to draw conclusions too broadly.

When I was 19, I dated a woman who was 41. Needless to say, it didn't last long.

There's a very old formula for this question. I think you take the older persons age, divide it in half, then add 7 to get an acceptable age for the younger person. So if you're 30, then the youngest you should date is (30/2) + 7 = 22 years old.

my grandparents are about 12 years apart and have been together for ages. I would say an age difference makes it more difficult.
I hate to say it but I don't blame this guy

I mean shes cute but she seems dumber than a rock. I could never have enough in common with a 16 year old kid to date them. Or even think about it.

I'll let you know. I'm 34, the girl I went out with last night is 22.
Amazing how nice her body is.

Most girls want a guy the same age or slightly older, 5 yrs is comfortable. At 10 yrs the probability of success starts to drop, but there are some exceptions: some girls actually like older guys. At 20+ yrs you're probably looking at a sugar-daddy relationship. :)

i just turned 25 and i'd prefer to date chicks who are at least 21 but no older than me. it's only my preference.

It's relative to age and gender. On a second marriage with a female over 40 or so, there's a higher probability that she's ok with marrying a guy over a decade older then herself. Once women get over the hill, the kids are gone, and she's around menopause, a much older and financially secure and less sexually demanding man is a good match. Worked for my first wife. We were just a few months apart in age. After several more short term marriages, she seemed to settle down nicely with a guy nearly 20 years older then her. With guys, the stigma is less nowadays with an older woman...i.e. the cougar effect. I don't see how it can work though IRL. Most so-called "exerienced women" over 40 are going through some heavy biological and emotional changes that HRT and SSRI's aren't going to change much. Perhaps they may appear sexually agressive with younger males, but there's no way that's going to last once the relationship loses the inital enthusiasm. Unless the male is undersexed and has the emotional latitude and patience of Jesus is a 10+ year difference unless the guy is in his late 40's or older. Much younger women are capable of caring for an older man. You're not going to see too many 35 y/o guys putting up with a women going through the change of life or dealing with health care issues unless she's financially loaded and makes it worth his while...and then I doubt that he's going to stay monogamous.

As long as she can start her own tab and pay her own bills(mortgage, car, etc),I really don't think it matters as long as the two people concerned have a real connection.
