George Carlin will always be the best. His sharp wit and intelligence made him the best. He made us laugh at the truth and ourselves.

FYI: Carlin had an IQ of 166.

Love Carlin!

He may have discussed the inconvenient truths of Americans, and people in general, but George Carlin, just like Bill Hicks, was not funny. What famous "gags" did he have? None.

He was a moany character who articulated points reasonably well but someone to induce laughter??? No chance.

Disagree totally. There was a time in the 80's when Carlin was the hottest act out there. Granted comedy is subjective, and you may not have doubled over at his act...but his popularity would disprove your criticism....or maybe you just weren't stoned in the 80's. lol

I love Billy Connolly. Years ago, he did a 20 minute routine in concert about farts. He talked about farts on planes, and the queen ordering her fart to go away. It was hysterical.

I love Brittish humour in general. But Atkinson in particular is so great! We used to love his Mr Bean show. It was on fridays here; often we had something else to do but we would take the time to watch it anyways. To me, the greatest thing about that show was the existential depth (I wouldn't go as far as saying "metaphysical" depth, but he was able through pure clowning, to express some very deep questions about our life and our society). Do you remember the beggining of the show? He suddenly is thrown on the set with a ray of light! Just expressing how we are thrown away on this world and completely left to ourselves. And the topics of the show were always the same: the loneliness, the abandonment of the individual, the impossiblity to reach the other, to create a real link, the opposition of the ego and the human desire to share! It was a brilliant show, much deeper than it seemed at first sight!

It was years ago Dan... and was set in the first world war. Utter genius. You should seek it out.

It was actually four series, Dan, set in different eras of history, starting in the Wars of the Roses, moving on to Elizabethan times, then Georgian and finally, and most memorably, the First World War.

Part of the genius was that two characters, Edmund Blackadder and his hapless servant Baldric were played in all four series by the same actors, Rowan Atkinson and Tony Robinson respectively. And while everything around them changed, their characters didn't.

There's a BBC boxed set, which I have, featuring all four series and a Christmas special that they did, loosely based on A Christmas Carol. But Series 4, in the First World War, is the gem.

Me too... but not tears of laughter

The impact of that one series on British attitudes to the folly and sacrifice of that war has been profound. For the younger generations it was the first real attempt to connect them to the carnage, and the renewed respect for the war dead stems to some degree at least from Blackadder.
