For me, it's a photo finish between The Godfather Part I, Part II, Goodfellas, and Casino. What do you think?

Just Mafia movies centering around Italians or do movies like Scarface, Blow, New Jack City, Suicide Kings, Sugar Hill count since they have crime families in them?

Basically, The Godfather Parts I and II are the best films about being at the top of the Mafia pyramid, and Goodfellas is the best film about being at the bottom of the Mafia pyramid. I think Casino is really underrated though. It's the best film about being peripheral to the Mafia pyramid.:)

Gangster or mafia. If its the Mafia - then its still got to be the first two Godfather movies. if its gangs and gangsters then the net is far wider.

The Seven Ups was good cause it was filmed in places of The Bronx I know.
The Robert De niro character was a real gangster named Jimmy Burke who made a nice living hijacking airport cargo outta JFK. He'd apologize to the truck drivers for robbing them and tying them up. He never failed to leave them with $100 to compensate them for the ordeal.
but you wouldn't want to get on his bad side.

The Italian Mafia originated in Sicily, and branched out in New York to other parts of the US, so I guess you have the dramas, but even The Godfather I and II are selective in their use of history -most organised crime syndicates in the years covered by Godfather I and II would use hitmen from the other syndicates to 'whack' a wise guy -the Italians, the Jews and the Irish dominated New York, Gangs of New York is a poor film, Once Upon a Time in America tries to cover the Jewish mob.

My list includes Godfather's because they are great films, but more focused on politics and power than boring day-to-day mafia activity. Anyway, if you expand it to cover the Comorra, top of the list is

1. Gomorrah -filmed on location in Naples it uses real Comorristi and tells the truth about this kind of life, a world away from Coppola.

2. On the Waterfront. A compelling study of how the Mafia infiltrated the docks -Brando is peerless in this brutal film.

3. Mean Streets -Scorsese's best film, his best score, and closer to the reality of street life than most Mafia films.

4. The French Connection I -New York again, and grim when it needs to be; has one of the top five car chases in movie history; and outstanding acting all round.

5. The Godfather I and II. The opening half-hour scene of Godfather I is one of the finest single scenes in film -a masterpiece of introduction to the main characters, their personality traits, the family culture and the lingo -but the weakness of these two films is the absence of major roles for women -Gomorrah once again shows how its done.

6. Goodfellas -for me it is the basis in fact that helps this, given that Scorsese has been in decline for so long. The Departed was a pathetic remake of the Hong Kong films Infernal Affairs, of which I and II are vastly superior to Departed; Casino is dire from beginning to end.

7. Lucky Luciano -a subtle film which suffers from Francesco Rosi's obsessions with conspiracy. His film on Salvatore Giuliano is feeble.

Goodfellas - Joe Pesci - Brilliant
The Departed - Big Bad Jack Nicholson
American Gangster - Very dark but great movie.
Ronin - Great movie filmed in France with De-Niro amongst others, maybe more IRA but also mafia, does this count.
The Long Good Friday - Classic Brit movie with Bob Hoskins & Helen Mirren.

Mafia is the general name of organized crime organizations.

In reality, there are four organizations in Italy:

Cosa Nostra from Sicily (Sicilia);
'Ndrangheta from Calabria (nowadays the strongest one because it control drug trafficking);
Camorra from Campania (I think that its main business is waste disposal);
Sacra Corona Unita from Apulia (Puglia).

Then you have the Russian Mafia, the Chinese Mafia, the Japanese Mafia (Yakuza) and so on...

A great society we built....

Oooo lots of good mafia movies out there. But for me, it's a toss up between "CASINO" and "GOODFELLAS". You can't go wrong with a mafia flick that stars both DiNiro and Pesci. These two are mafia movie gold.

:iagree::iagree::iagree: A Bronx Tale was excellent.

When it comes to modern gangster films, they don't have to be in English.

Last year's two-part biopic of the French gangster Mesrine, starring Vincent Cassel, was outstanding. Worth four hours of anyone's time on DVD.

I love the scene in GOODFELLAS where DeNiro goes ape shit in his Queens bar after the big heist. His guys are showing up for the celebration with big new Caddies and fancy furs after he specifically told everyone to lay low after the robbery and not spend the cash.

I was gonna post this myself , but you beat me to it.

I would add Donnie Brasco instead of Goodfellas for being at the bottom. In Goodfellas they had their shot, but Al Pachino in D.B never had a chance. He was going nowhere slow.

http://1.2.3.11/bmi/www.hungangels.com/vboard/images/editor/separator.gifThis is now a stupid and pointless thread-from 'the best Mafia movies' to ANY movie about the Mafia and any film about gangs or crime syndicates, which is a different thread. Note how quantity eventually replaces quality -does anyone seriously think Casino, or Violent City, or The Road to Perdition are a great films? In the end this will just be people listing films -and nobody has yet mentioned The Sopranos...
