Smart man. I live in California and it is a bitch to buy ammo. I was good at taking advantage of the gun shows and filling up the back of SUVs with guns and ammo. All bought legally 100%.

Love loading up a 12 Gauge with slugs. Grab some old TVs and destroy them.

I hope you get your AR15. I know you know how to use it.

the first gun I would take is a .38 revolver 'cause it's easy to carry ....

the second one is ak 47 .... the gun that US soldiers hate 'cause it's the most useful to handle (everybody can use it 'cause it's easy to) and you can use it in winter, sunny days, dust etc

According to some, it has not yet been banned in CA. However, it may be after it's released, so the thought is to get it soon after it is released. This will not be easy since people already have it on pre-order. I've heard some things about Kel-Tec quality (not good), so I really wanted to wait and see this particular product.

And let me say this: you really need to make your own ammo!

It is a discussion like this that makes me feel despair. When I saw the title i thought - hoped - it was an ironic thing, a joke. Sadly I see that many of my fellow enthusiasts for girls with "sex pistols" are deeply enamoured of the more deadly kind. I find this so depressing I cannot really articulate it properly.

What is it about the potential to deal death that so fascinates so many men?

It is odd I came upon this thread. With the worsening economy and my fear that there might be civil unrest, I went out yesterday and bought a Remmington 870 pump shotgun (with lots of amunition).

With Obamas leadership leading use into the national poorhouse I real anticipate problems similar to Greece. Google "Wisconsin State Fair" for the taste of things to come.

You ony have to look at the murder statistics in the US to see the total fallacy of the notion that being armed stops people getting killed when the truth is so clearly the very opposite. The UK is not free of bullshit. Two dirty chavs break down your door, one armed with an illegal gun, you of course not, because they are illegal. What do you do? Call police lol?

In America, the first kick on my door, I have my gun. By the time the door comes down, all I have to do is wait for them to walk in and bang. Afterwards I press the panic button on my home alarm and about ~15 minutes later police arrive to clean up the mess.

Gun bans remove guns from law abiding citizens and while maybe reducing gun crime, just enhances knife crimes or use of alternative weapons. But like the prohibition of alcohol, it induces the formation of underground criminal activity like weapons trafficking, which ends up providing criminals access to weapons that law abiding ones have no access to.

Well said kittyKaiti.

Pennsylvania just made changes to the Castle Doctrine which protects legal gun owners from protecting themselves in their home and in public. Before gun owners had to "run away" instead of protecting ourselves. Now, if we are threatened we can just pull our gun shoot and can't be sued.

Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

Castle Doctrine, right to self defense and gun ownership should all be federal level rights. Half the states in the country don't have Castle Doctrine, surprisingly, New York does, specifying the right to kill an intruder if he is trying to burglarize (steal property) from the home... which is odd that NY Castle Doctrine does not specify the requirement to flee from attack or anything regarding defense of safety and life.

Clearly you watch too many movies. It's rather nauseating the way WASPs from the UK now pontificate when they are responsible for a vast amount of the violence in the world today. Your meddling in the affairs of others has directly contributed to slaughter for centuries and all from the safety of your little island home. Nobody asked for you to moralize on this thread but as usual you feel the need to take issue with other cultures because being a Briton or a Scot or a Welshman is just so much better, isn't it?

"Statistics are like women; mirrors of purest virtue and truth, or like whores to use as one pleases."

You can't just adjust for population and expect everything to be all wonderful. There's certain problems that arise out of nothing more than having a population of 300 million people. Illegal weapons and crime are problems endemic to poverty whatever country you goto and it get's exponentially worse as the population rises. Guns have nothing to do with the problem of violence in America. I don't know if you've lived here ever for extended periods of time but you could outlaw weapons in America like the Brady campaign is set on, but it's not going to put fucking dent in the drug trade which we Americans love so much. It's not going to put a fucking dent on the inner city gang violence in East LA, or S Chicago, or San Antonio, or any fucking large city in America. Banning the legal sale of assault rifles won't do a fucking thing, most violent crimes are committed with cheap saturday night specials. If you really wanna lower gun violence in America you should outlaw cheap, spotty weapons so poor drug dealers can't buy them out of the back of chrysler for less than the cost of a good bottle of scotch.

AR-15, Bushmaster with tactical rails and a carbon fiber lower reciver!

I like my Bushmasters ok, but you can do much better for about the same money. Don't get a carbon lower if you actually want a long-lasting, dependable fighting gun. Don't get rails unless you get something good (not YHM or UTG)and actually need all the rail space. I'll probably be selling one of my Spikes BAR 12" rails soon.
If you really have your heart set, then go for it and have fun. Otherwise, just ask and I can point you in a better direction.

I won't be getting a new gun until I move and settle in, in either Florida or Nevada. But I'd totally be getting a 1911 .45 and an AR-15. New York sucks when it comes to buying pistols or assault weapons.

Amen to that. Friend moved to NY recently and I have his AR and a few others in the back of my safe. If you don't mind me asking, why the .45 1911? Not saying you're a wimpy girl, just curious. BTW, skip Kimber and SIG, they were both ruined by the same dumbass CEO. All my SIGs are pre-Cohen/no QC days.
Since you're moving to FL, you could buy a local product Spikes mid AR. Good quality, decent price.

I want a 1911 .45 for stopping power. That or to compensate for a smaller caliber like getting a 9mm, something with high magazine capacity. I also just really like the 1911.

Have to admit, 1911 is pretty hard not to like. Actually, in keeping with the topic, I'd like to get an STI Lawman or Sentry one of these days.
Just shoot a few different models before buying. Pay attention to muzzle climb/recoil as it pertains to follow up shots. Hitting an attacker with more bullets will be more effective than 1/10" diameter increase. 9x19, 40SW, .45ACP, 357SIG are all the same for all intents and purposes. Use a good modern bullet design (Winchester RangerT, Speer Gold Dot, Federal HST) and you'd be fine with any.
Handgun is a handgun so unless you plan on 44mag, it's technically only designed as last resort until you get to a rifle.

.44 Mag in a handgun, is still a handgun. Bigger than a .380, but still a handgun none the less. Fired out of a rifle barrel, it's a bit faster.

I've shot a few deer with a Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 with an 8 3/4" barrel and some pretty hot hollow point loads. Unless it's a head or spine shot, expect them to run a few yards before expiring. Same holds true for a 12 gauge and 1 oz slugs as well. Do a terminal ballistics check on a 1 oz slug v/s a 240 grain or so .44 both going around 1300 FPS.

High powered rifles are another story. Bit of shock factor added in there!
Actually, I have shot deer with a bow and arrow made it less far than the .44 Mag. In all reality, it was probably more due to the tree stand and them never knowing what "bit" them. Hard to run from a sniper...LOL

Mostly a joke. I know more about gun safety than the ex-Marine that 'accidentally' shot her boyfriend with a bolt action rifle. It's more that I have bouts of depression for which easy access to a firearm is not the recommended cure. Best that I keep my gun use to the occasional trip to the range with friends.

I am similar, my mental state and guns don't go good together. And maybe my visits to the mental ward probably disqualify me from buying a gun.

I use voodoo, but it only works as a revenge thing, it doesn't help me when facing the barrel of a gun.

What is it about the potential to deal death that so fascinates so many men?

this is a tough debate. I have been a "gun guy" since I was a kid. my dad had them, we'd go shooting at the gun range as a family. I learned how to care for, and respect, firearms. To me it has nothing to do with the potential to deal death. Thats a hightened fanatical view of gun-ownership. Seriously, break it down: you own kitchen knives? Have any big carving knives? whats to stop you from grabbing one and going ape-shit on some poor unsuspecting slobs? own a baseball bat? Have access to a hardware store where they sell iron pipes? how about an automobile? everytime any one of us gets be hind the wheel, we are instantly at the helm of one of the most powerful and most readily available weapons in existence. but nobody sees that inherant view of cars--they are just meant to get us from point a to b. guns were designed to kill, that much is undisputable fact. however, this day and age, guns are for sport, recreation, and defense. it is highly unlikely that 99% will ever need to worry about defense, but it doesn't mean I shouldn't be allowed to have one just in case. I'm betting you never fired a gun, and never experienced the thrill of it. its fun! and it doesn't have to be relegated to "death and destruction" alone.

If you really wanna lower gun violence in America you should outlaw cheap, spotty weapons so poor drug dealers can't buy them out of the back of chrysler for less than the cost of a good bottle of scotch.

nice :)

Domestic Dispute Ends With Eight Dead
Eight people have been shot dead in the US state of Ohio following what police described as a domestic dispute.
The shooting happened in Copley, around 40 miles south of Cleveland.
The gunman killed five people in one area of the township, before killing two others elsewhere.
His victims included his girlfriend and her brother, along with an 11-year-old child.
One official said the dead also included two high school students.
The shooter was later killed in an exchange of gunfire with officers.
Police have said little about the incident - the gunman's identity has not been disclosed or any speculation on his motive.
They would also not comment on who the victims were or how they were connected.
Copley Police Chief Michael Mier said: "Our job is extremely complicated right now.
"The crime scene is being treated like any other - it's a little unusual in that it is so large and involves multiple locations."
Reports of a person running through the neighborhood and firing a gun prompted calls to police.
"At a home, the gunman shot his girlfriend, ran to a home next door and shot her brother and four others, then chased two people through some yards and shot one of them," a police spokesman said.
"He went into a third home and shot another person before leaving and exchanging gunfire with a police officer and a former police officer."
A woman, who was shot and wounded by the gunman, was taken to hospital, but no details have been released about her injuries or condition.
About 300 people held a prayer vigil for the victims on Sunday evening, many of them high school students.

I understand completly where you are coming from Needsum. I live in the UK and we have very tight gun laws, I'm licensed and own a 12 guage shotgun which I have had for some 25yrs now and love it for sport whether it be bird shooting or clay pigeon.

I do love guns though and as a tourist love to go and try out lots of hardware wherever possible, have probably fired 20 or more different types of guns which is a pretty good selection for a civillian Brit.

I have never once wanted to take my gun out and use it for anything other than the purpose to which I stated above but the sad fact of the matter is that the more weapons there are around the easier it is for them to fall in the wrong hands. Sure a car is a lethal weapon and so is a kitchen knife but statistics will tell you that very few people will use their car to kill / maime someone intentionally. On the other hand there are millions of knives in the world and in the UK we have a knife crime issue. But as always it is not with the average Joe, sensible man in the street it is the gangs and extremists. If guns were freely available in the UK then I suspect we would be subject to rising gun crimes as is prevalent in the USA.

Fact of the matter is that if the guns are not available then the chances of gun crime are greatly reduced so I as a person who enjoys guns support the UK stance on this.

That said I love to play with guns and so long as you guys still welcome us Brits then I'm happy to come to the States and play around then fly home and leave you guys with the constant worry that the next time someone raises their voice they don't pull a 357 from out of their pocket.

No shit "automatic" weapons aren't that easy to get a hold of, even in Texas. The right FFL is expensive as shit, no one is going to take the time to go through all the federal rings to drop 10-20 grand on a automatic rifle and then sell it a drug dealer. Assault rifles that are truly assault rifles in the hands of criminals and dealers get there from corrupt and retarded ATF policies and stolen weapons from the US military and police meant for destruction. They may be made in America but they don't come from here, they're shipped right up the border with Mexico along with the drugs. 1 trained person with a semi-automatic rifle can shoot way more accurately than a fire team's worth of dumb asses from the ghetto.

Now on to more important stuff, here are most of mine. Missing from the photos, I also have a Mauser M-98 and a mossberg .22 single shot rifle that was my dads when he was a kid. WOuld have a couple Colt AR-15's and a M1-carbine as well, but thanks to good ol Jim Florio they are illegal in NJ and now reside with my uncle in Texas.

That said I love to play with guns and so long as you guys still welcome us Brits then I'm happy to come to the States and play around then fly home and leave you guys with the constant worry that the next time someone raises their voice they don't pull a 357 from out of their pocket.

thanks for the reply, and I'm glad to see your position on this. however, one thing that many people don't realize from out of the country is that the vast majority of the gun crime committed here in the US is done with illegal firearms. in many if not most states, there is a rigorous application process just to get your Firearms ID card. Here in NJ, it means going to the local PD, getting fingerprinted, filling out a background sheck with the State Police, and waiting several months for someone to decide if you will be accepted. Some states are very liberal with purchase policies, but most require some form of waiting period and background check. But as for the gun violence, since the rigors of the application make it easy for law enforcement to trace the gun back to its owner via ballistics, anyone looking to use a weapon for crime will be going to some back alley, and buying a stolen or illegally imported weapon from some criminal. The every day gun-owner who goea about the process legally (and thats the VAST majority of us) has no intention to use for harm, unless in self defense.

if you take the guns away from the regular people, the criminals will STILL get guns. its a simple fact, because they are not obtaining them the way the regular people are. who is to stop them?

No shit "automatic" weapons aren't that easy to get a hold of, even in Texas. The right FFL is expensive as shit, no one is going to take the time to go through all the federal rings to drop 10-20 grand on a automatic rifle and then sell it a drug dealer. Assault rifles that are truly assault rifles in the hands of criminals and dealers get there from corrupt and retarded ATF policies and stolen weapons from the US military and police meant for destruction. BINGO. there are no flaws to the argument I made Prospero, mostly because I am not even talking about automatic assault weapons. As the hammer mentioned, you cannot even legally purchase an automatic assault weapon in 48 of the 50 states. They were outlawed here in NJ over 20 years ago. Sure, I''d LOVE to have a Tompson sub-machine gun for the collectability and nostalgia of it, but it ain't ever gonna happen. those days are long gone. Not to sound too repetitive, but those kind of guns are here illegally, acquired illegally, and used by criminalls for illegal activity. Why punish me and people like me because some assholes break the law? those people will do what they do no matter what happens to me and my kind.

Why do they sell sports cars that can drive to well in excess of 100 MPH when speed limits are at max 75 MPH, but mostly 55 MPH? because people want them, and the assumption is that they will be responsible when they operate them. You get more speeders and accidents/deaths because of high speed collisions than you do firearm deaths from people who are legal, responsible gun owners. SO should we then ban Corvettes, Ferrarri's etc from all roadways? Would seem to be fitting if your argument was truly sound.

the basic fact here is that it all comes down to personal responsibility, and you are telling me that I am not responsible enough to safely own and operate a firearm if I do indeed choose to do so. I use the car and kitchen knife example because those are also examples of personal responsibility. maybe the knife is a bit far fetched, but ask John Wayne Bobbit that....

You don't get it do you. Cars are designed to move people around. Guns are designed to kill. The guy who killed all those people in Ohio yesterday would not have found it so easy if he didn't have such easy access to weapons. We control weapons in the Uk and just don't have the death toll you guys notch up. No one is against guns for hunting and sporting purposes but ... well.....

Needsum... I don't doubt that you are a goo guy and I am sure most of the nice guys who post here are responsible and won't go on shooting sprees. But the easy avaiabiilty of them makes it much easier. of course it can happen where guns are more tightly controlled. But.....

I do get it and you are right in many ways. Cars are indeed designed to move people around. However I point to my most previous statement of personal responsibility. people misuse everyday things to an extent that they were never designed for, such as cars, without thinking of consequenses, and bad things happen, much more frequently than when violent cromes are commeitted with firearms. I am in no way trying to defend the criminal who uses firearms--my point is that they get these firearms illegally 90% of the time, if not more. Controlling the guns here will not end gun violence. There are even statistics that show a comparison of two towns who had oppoiste actions take place here in the US. one town allowed for homeowners to protect themselves via firearms. The other town banned them. The first town saw a sharp decline in crime, while the other town saw an increase. Why? because the knew they would have little opposition when they invaded someones property. I will try and find the article that has this information in it. but one last time, controlling the guns in this country is only limiting the ability for the person who is looking to do things the right way, the legal way. if there was a way to control the criminals from getting illegal firearms, we'd be having a completely different discussion right now... ;)

But thanks for your input. I always like to see things from others viewpoints and try to have an intelligent debate about it whenever possible. Hopefully I come off as intelligent... lol!!

Needsum, I guess I am somewhere very much in the middle of this debate.

Of course I fully appreciate that 99.9% of all legal gun owners in USA and for that matter the rest of the world are responsible and law abiding citizens like yourself. I also understand that 99.9% of gun crime is committed by illegal weapons.

The fact of the matter is that if you want to obtain a weapon legally you have to jump throught hoops and declare your inner soul and wait months and they may allow it. But if you have a wad of cash and know the right people then weapons can be obtained.

Its a simple equation in that the higher volume of guns and open gun culture means that there is more hardware within the system and problems with border crossings have exasperated the problem. I do agree with what you say though that there must be so many illegal weapons that re-enter the network via corruption at a higher level, whether it be police forces or military.

I do however agree with Prospero in that why do people need to hold assult rifles and vast stocks of ammo, one previous poster quoted he always holds a couple of thousand rounds of ammo for each weapon. That is enough to start a small war on your own. OK if he runs a gun club but as an individual I can't understand the need for such consumption.

I don't know the answer and as someone pointed out it is in your constitution to bare arms to protect yourself and has been around hundreds of years and will not change.

I like to put my shooting gear on and wellies and get out in the country but a 12 bore does the job, no need for an assult rifle in the UK and lets keep it that way.

Good debate though Needsum and great to hear all sides, looks like I need to book a trip to your place for a week to have a go with some of your hardware. Ed.

needsum
08-08-2011, 09:26 PM
Anytime Ed, we'd have a blast (no pun intended...lol) I guess when it comes down to it, one of the reasons why I compare the guns to the sports cars, is that nobody NEEDS either of them; in a practical world, for the average Joe citizen, they are impractical. I will stand by the fact that there are more deaths from car accidents, due to drunk driving, speeding, and recless driving than due to gun violence. I have all these weapons yet I cannot honestly tell you how many years it has been since I shot any one of them. So it is for certain that I do not need any of them. But I enjoy them, I cherish the right to own them, and feel a little better knowing that, should someone break into my house, I can defend my family to the fullest extent possible. I certainly understand the point of view of Prospero and yourself, where you wonder why someone needs so muh ammunition, or even the "assault weapon" itself. I liken it to those people who drive the porches, Ferrarri's etc... they drive them because they can.... (oh, and on a side note, as far as ammunition stockpiles go, the stuff can be pretty expensive. So when you find an advertisement for it on sale, sometimes it makes sense to buy a lot of it knowing you will be storing it, rather than 1) spending more to buy less, and 2) taking the chance that you will be regulated someday to only being allowed a certian amount to purchase should someone get into power who thinks all things are bad)

"Why do they sell sports cars that can drive to well in excess of 100 MPH when speed limits are at max 75 MPH, but mostly 55 MPH? because people want them, and the assumption is that they will be responsible when they operate them. "

It is surely because you get a better performance from these cars at a lower speed. The quintessence of the argument remains that guns are designed to kill - nothing else, cars, kitchen knives etc have that primary purpose. Yes guns should be controlled. the magic bullet though is how to get all the guns that are out there - especially among the criminal fraternity - back. That's rather like getting the genii back into the bottle. But the sort of hugely aggressive remarks made earlier by some posters here - way beyond the mildness of the arguments I'd been offering - is what worries me. Match that level of aggression with a hot temper and a hand gun and you get dead people instead of black eyes.

Anyway i really am not going to post here any more. I recognise that nothing i say will change the minds of anyone here and nor will you change mine - unless you corner me with a gun.

Fukker, whatever the topic, it'd nice to see you posting again!
Cheer us all up, tell us about *your* miseries! :hide-1:

Yah, been a stressful and tiring year and I haven't been posting much. My list of miseries is pretty long, but not quite as bad as it was a year ago. Still causes me to lose sleep though. I hope to have a 'date night' next week, so I'll be in a better frame of mind after that. :)

On topic: I really have been thinking of taking up re-loading as a 'hobby'. Lord knows that most of my neighbors are armed to the teeth and could use such a service. I've become a bit of a fan of Larry Potterfield of Midway USA and think that PBS should sign him on as the new generation's 'Mr. Rogers'. Talk about 'separated at birth'. :) Re-loading is a basic, assembly line activity that would satisfy my OCD and keep me on a friendly level with the local militia.

My next-door neighbor sez that as long as the blowout wall on the shed faces away from his property he's all for my new hobby.

Not all Republicans are like that Kitty. The newer generation of Republicans are much more tolerant on many social issues. I agree that there is still the 'old-guard' out there, thumping bibles and what-not but I see that older generating fading away...

I have several gay friends who are conservative and vote Republican because they simply want less government and more personal freedom/accountability.
I consider myself to be a constitutional conservative - I typically vote Republican but I have A LOT of libertarian leanings on things and frequently vote libertarian, esp. in State and local races.

By the way Kitty, your collection looks like something out of a Quentin Tarantino movie

Where I'm from I get my guns from the military, the UN or American forces. Gun stores don't exist in my country.
We need them to defend ourselves from car-jackings, muggings & home burglaries.
Women don't carry for the most part; they usually have armed bodyguards sitting in the passenger seat.
When I drive, I carry a 10mm Glock 20, but I'll tell you that my 4x4 serves more as a weapon than any gun.

It's just you. There are way bigger guns that are legal for us to own. Plus they are selling it in Semi automatic so it is just as dangerous as any other semi automatic. It will only fire as fast as you can pull the trigger. It looks cool so people just think it can do more than it is actually able. Having it belt fed is no different than having a C-mag on it. Why classify it fully auto when it is not?
