I'm always slow about buying things because I feel I have to do endless research. Now I need to buy a new PC. Think I'm pulling the trigger on this Dell. Best Buy mailed me a coupon to get $130 Gift Card for spending over $1000. The computer is $1049.99.

Living in rip-off Britain, that equates to about 800 quid.
For a computer, fuck no!

Ask yourself what you want a computer for?
Unless you're a game player, graphic artist, scientist, do you really need a high spec monster?

Most of the time, i can get by on my phone! :hide-1:

What a time for Grim to be AWOL.

Dino, make sure any software you already have will still run in a 64 bit environment or you will have to replace it. Especially Office- that's expensive to buy.

Have you tried to build a similar system on Dell's website for comparison? Try it. ..if Monet isn't an issue then just get the fastest processor, the best graphics card and upgrade to a solid state drive.

Otherwise, you'll be shopping again inside of 18 months.

Been building computers since age 14 and working and playing on them since age 11 and 5 respectfully. The computer I have is a bit past the price range you have there Dino, but even though I *hate* prebuilts....and dell......it will do fine for what you want to use it for, decent graphics card, good processor, plenty of HD space, though I would partition the hell out of it to make it easier to keep track of things, and good amount of RAM for a 64 bit.

If your looking for a meaner computer though, and need it prebuilt, I suggest these guys, I have used them for friends in the past in other states, ones I couldnt help build it myself.

http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Gamer_Dragon_9000/

That PC right there will eat the Dell alive easy, but keep in mind that the price doesnt include a Monitor if you want it add 100-200 dollars depending up the size and specs.

If you wanna built a PC from scratch from that site or anywhere else, just gimme a hollar in my PM ill give you my email address and help you out anytime you want.

Do yourself a favor and skip bestbuy, they are NOT the bestbuy. Try looking at newegg.com, amazon.com or tigerdirect.com. There prices are always lower and the customer service and shipping are much better also.

As for myself, I built myself a beast. A Rosewill Armor case with Gigabyte X58 motherboard, 3.2 GHz quad-core i7 processor, Patriot Viper Extreme 12 GB RAM, XFX Radeon 6950 2GB video card, dual Samsung 23" flat panels, 2.5TB internal hard drives with 6TB external hard drives, Smasung Blu-ray drive all powered by a Rosewill Bronze 1000W power supply. I absolutely love this computer! It's incredibly fast, but the dual displays steal the show, I could never go back to single screen and hate using my laptop when I travel now b/c of this.

(I was bored and looked all that up from my Newegg order back in February)

Huge newegg supporter myself lol, and the ability to RMA parts is a huge bonus too.

The one I built from them for myself is as follows
Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium 64
Mainboard : Asus M4N98TD EVO
Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor (4 CPUs), ~3.7GHz
Memory: 8 GB Corsair Dominator 1600MHz
Video Card: MSI GTX 460 Cyclone 1GB X2 SLI
PSU: COOLER MASTER Silent Pro 1000W SLI Ready 80 PLUS BRONZE
Case: Cooler Master HAF 932 (3 230mm, 1 140mm Fans)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master V6 GT
Monitor: Samsung 23 in LCD LED Backlit HD (Soon to be another 23in LED)
Hard Drives: ------
Boot Drive: 100 GB OCZ Agility 2 SSD
Data Drives:750 GB Western Digital Green 7200, 500 GB Western Digital Blue 7200

I will be upgrading eventually, but I am skipping the 500 series and waiting for the keplar cards which will be 2-3 times faster than Fermi, as well as the Bulldozer Series AMD Cpu's which will feature the first 8 core, but ill be getting a 6 lol, 8's will probably be through the roof in price.

I have used Macs at home for many years now and still love them. My current is a 17" Macbook Pro, top of the line, that I got for $1000 USD off (about a third) because I bought an editing model just as a major upgrade was being launched. I've done that before as well and saved 20%.
As an IT professional, I advise people to analyze their computer use in terms of adding up to 100%: email, videos, games, internet, etc. and use that as a guide in making a selection, in addition to ease of use, reliability, and other factors. I agree that unless you are into heavy gaming, video or graphics production and other high-end uses, a monster tower is not needed anymore. Smaller desktop and laptops have improved to such a degree to meet most home users' needs, and those of many professionals. With the addition of smartphones and tablets, the computer world is changing dramatically as portable computing is carving a huge niche.

And I LOVE my Mac!

Fucking Best Buy! That $130 Gift Card isn't applicable on computers or TVs. I got mad and asked the manager, "What the Hell do you sell for over $1000 that I would want to buy?" I pulled out 15 $100 bills, showed him, then put it back in my pocket letting him know I'll just give it to Dell itself.

This is what I will buy. Bundle deal this time. For $1349, I get the same computer I wanted plus a 24'' HD Monitor and Bose Speakers. Better off this way anyhow.

Stay away from pre-config models at retail stores if you really want a good computer. Your best bet is to configure one online and get it directly from the manufacturer. I would focus on getting the best processor you can afford (do some research on the benchmarks)..there are a lot of crappy/slow cpu's out there and you will most likely find them in a Best Buy model. Do not skimp on your hard drive either, you want the fastest you can afford. Next make sure you get absolutely no less than 4GB ram. 8 is better and get 12 if you can afford it. Dont overpay for a tricked out video card either unless you are a hardcore gamer. Also dont load up on crappy blu-ray drives and other trinkets. You can add those manually later for a much better price. Focus on the 3 : cpu, hard drive, and quality RAM

I do a ton of hardcore gaming, Battlefield series especially, along with any other games that catch my attention, a lot of the requiring quite a bit of computer power, CPU, RAM and Graphics, so I figure why skim the edges, just go for gold and ultra graphics settings ;)

I have had PC for over 15 years with 3 computers, and have never had a virus. I have Norton Anti-virus suite, and it has caught several attempts to invade my comp. but it has always stopped it dead in it's tracks.

My 3 comps have had Windows ME, Windows 2000, and now Windows Vista Home Premium. People have complained up the ass about all 3, yet I never had one problem with any of them. I have to wonder if some people just don't know how to set up their computer.

The reason I stuck with PC Windows OS's is that the internet is built, owned, and operated by Microsoft. They have geared the internet to PC worldwide. Almost all of the major software is designed and developed by Microsoft, and other developers that use PC. Software for Mac is second language and designed so it must convert the internet (PC) to Mac and back to PC. Even though it may work, something always gets lost in the translation.

I figured that if the age of the internet and software is geared originally for PC, then the best OS to handle it would be the same as the original. Get a good anti-virus program that you actually have to pay for. Do NOT get anti-virus protection that is free from a thousand websites. If they were any good, they wouldn't be free. You pay $1,000 for a nice computer, so don't depend on a cheap or free program to protect it. I have Norton, and it only cost me $60 a year to protect my $1,000 investment. It is worth every penny.

That site isn't really a good deal at all. The closest computer they have to mine spec-wise costs over $300 more than mine was! It's video card is half what mine is, and it didn't include the monitors or any other hardware besides the tower itself. You're much better off building your own, it's so much cheaper, and incredibly easy!

I agreed with most of what you said until this last paragraph. Back in 2004 I bought a new computer and purchased Norton Pro for a year. I never had so many computer problems in my life! After talking to my buddy about this he suggested I try AVG free, never again got a virus!! Along with AVG I run Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D, and for over 7 years I have never had a problem. About a year ago I switched to Avira Free and prefer it over AVG. The crappy thing about that all was I paid for a year of Norton Pro and only used it for 2-3 months, such a waste of money!!

Norton had a problem for 2 years, but fixed it and now works perfectly. I remember it well. Old news now. Norton now does constant update

AVG free is not bad, but it has one bad fault. AVG catches a virus after it is in your computer files. It takes the infected file and contains it in a separate file on your hard drive they call a containment Vault, that can not be opened. But if that file was important to a program, it is gone, and the program may run with problems or not at all. You would have to reinstall the program to regain the lost infected file. And the virus is still on your hard drive. If the AVG containment file ever fails, the virus is back into your OS files.

Norton removes the virus as it is coming in to the PC and destroys it. It is no longer alive and in your PC. If you already have a virus, and install Norton to deal with it, Norton removes the virus from the infected file, and leaves the file intact. Then Norton erases the virus codes from your PC. I have watched it happen. Was on a site, and the screen goes red with a message from Norton telling me that a virus has tried to invade my computer, but was caught and erased. No other actions are required. Twenty seconds later, I am back surfing.

That is the problem with free anti-virus programs. They do not remove it from your computer. They just contain it in another file created by AVG. But they contain the entire file that was infected, and not just the virus.

You get what you pay for, and for me, a $1,000 investment is worth a few extra bucks to keep it safe.

I installed AVG for years on other's PCs until somebody was having a lot of spyware issues it didn't catch. I installed Avast free and lo' and behold all the crap was found and removed. Unlike AVG (bought by MSFT, BTW), Avast announces ads to buy their product as well as updates. But it works.

I'm moving computers to Microsoft Security Essentials at the moment. The performance hit is not nearly as bad as Symantec (SEP), but the protection level is certainly less.

...and you can set Avast to speak to you in "pirate"...and honestly, what's cooler than that?!! huh?

...I'm still using it (though I did get sick of the pirate talk and switched back to the girl voice).
