View Full Version : It's Still Weird For Me To Hear Ronnie James Dio Songs

I took Dio's death fairly hard. I never do that with celebs or rock stars but it was Ronnie Fucking James Dio. I pick up a Rainbow, Sabbath, or Dio album then get bummed and decide to listen to something else. I still listen from time to time but it's not the same.

Anyone have a similar experience with someone in music or movies and you have a heavy heart while enjoying their work?

Every now and then when Im blasting Alice In Chains I get bummed out at the lost potential of a long career from Layne Staley.

I know what you mean about Dio though, he is so far the only artist Ive seen twice in large outdoor stadiums, once at Alpine Valley in Wisconsin, and then about 2 years later at a monsters of rock festival in Germany. I still think the albums of Heaven and hell, and Mob Rules are Black Sabbaths best.

Back in High School, we'd wear out LIVE EVIL cassette tapes playing them over and over until they busted. We'd go to Tower Records and buy a new one and wear that one out too.

Dio is the shit. But yes, I feel that way about Freddie Mercury and Queen, Bon Scott and ACDC, Dave Williams and Drowning Pool, Dimebag and Pantera. It's always different reminiscing the fallen.

Bon Scott died around 1979 so I have no problem listening to his AC/DC stuff. I actually prefer Bon Scott over Brian Johnson anyway.

Hell, that works too. Dio could sing a Limp Bizkit song and sound good.

I have to admit that the band Boston has always been a guilty pleasure of mine. I've loved them ever since I was a kid growing up in the 70's, even though they epitomized the mainstream AOR / arena rock culture at the time. Brad Delp's pipes were simply out of this world and I will always regret that he passed too soon. On top of that, I also regret that Boston put out such a limited body of work over 35 years due to Tom Scholtz's snail-like songwriting pace and perfectionism. But at least we have what we have and what we do have is outstanding music (much much stronger than just the singles most people are familiar with). Hearing Brad's voice immediately takes me back to my youth, a happy happy place. Unfortunately, like my youth Brad Delp is gone forever and all that is left are the memories
